Whatever became of Bert's Books?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Good to hear that Bohrs has survived, he is a nice man with lovely kids. Boston Books was great, I bought some terrific American books there.
We just had the annual library service book sale, over 40,000 books for two and three dollars. I got a box full. My favorite is one about the 1860 Democratic convention held less than a year before the war. US politics has always had whacky politicians, do you know about the Do Nothing Party LTO? Surprisingly they didn't last.
Cassius Clay was quite prominent, a great man, publisher, anti slavery guy who was a god knife fighter. Two men jumped him once, he killed one after cutting his face to pieces. Another time six men attacked him , he killed one of them as well and drove them off.

It closed because Bert was enraged about something the government said or did, right?

What became of Bert?
Bert is doing well, currently living in Alaska with a profound friend he has known for 25+ years, Bob Ward. Although, I am not quite positive as to why the book store was shut down, I do believe it was due to Pol Pot threatening him, since he was trying to create a difference, and as you may know, change was despised then, as it may even be now. I am his 3rd child, Nathaniel Hoak, & he sent me this through e-mail, though I currently do not reside in Alaska, I will be moving back there from North Carolina to graduate high school there. In the future I am definitely planning on spending some time in Cambodia, being that I have never been there yet, and would love to experience Cambodia as well as the world. If you would like to contact me or Bert here is the e-mail:

"it was due to Pol Pot threatening him"

Pretty sure it had nothing to do with Pol Pot.

Glad to hear all is well. Befitting the times a good share of my fond, but slightly bizarre memories stem from that modest hole in the wall business that was well stocked with books and customers just as eclectic. Anyway, it was the only place in Phnom Penh where a free temperance lecture was served with each beer. I wish you all the best and hope Bert himself posts on CEO one day.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.
