What's with the inflation?
What's with the inflation?
Over the last few weeks, three restaurants and 2 coffee shops that I frequent have raised their prices quite substantially. I Also noticed that a few import items I buy have increased. The USD has been on a tear for a couple years now, and has increased substantially relative to nearly every currency over that time. The cost for most goods have dropped from about 10-30% (Baht at the low end, Aussie dollar at the high end) in US dollars during that period. So whats driving inflation here? Is it a case of high inflation of those goods in their originating country, the more proper application of import tariffs last year, local wage increases?

Greed ?
Re: What's with the inflation?
Probably because it's the start of the tourist season.
Re: What's with the inflation?
I thought that was somewhat of a given when any business rises prices by more than 10% without any justifiable cause.Barang_doa_slae wrote:Greed ?

Unlikely, the majority of the clientele are local and expats I would say.Kuroneko wrote:Probably because it's the start of the tourist season.

...now cheaper, as in cheaper in USD, the de facto KH currency! Sure local prices for some imported goods will rise in England, same as they did in Aust. and Canada (and other countries) over the last 2 years to even greater degree as their currencies devalued heavily relative to most other major currencies. But try to grasp my point...non imported British/Aus/German goods generally don't go up in price in their own countries due to this, yet if they're bought in USD, they're cheaper, and the only money in my wallet in Cambodia is US dollars.Jamie_Lambo wrote:??Raybull wrote:Not quite sure I follow. Re: What's with the inflation?
Seriously mate, what inflation? After 5 years now, NOTHING has gone up in price.
Still can get 50 cent beers here, still can get fukn GOOD food, every day at $4.
High season EVERYWHERE in a tourist town always has a premium price. I just booked a return ticket to fukn Oz, fly out on Friday(02/12), come back on the next Sunday( 13/12) . It is $80 LESS than the last time I did it 4 years ago.
Inflation?.........
