I think you're missing the point...this has nothing to do with high season prices in tourist places or cheap airline prices compared to when jet fuel was more then twice what it is now, in an industry that has seen declining prices for over ten years, bringing about the sardine 10 seats across now common in economy. It's simply a matter of buying imported goods and food in Cambodia that are increasing in price in US dollars while the USD has been in a steep uptrend. While imported stuff is now cheaper in the US, this country that uses the same strengthening currency has seen an upward trend in prices.
Sure, draft beer hasn't gone up since forever in foreign locales (but who gives a shite about local draft beer?, good import wine and booze has gone up), for local beer the production costs are now sunk in already at the factory, and the margin at cheap restaurants has been made up elsewhere, namely food prices. But this doesn't account for it.
Say you bought lamb shanks for 10NZ$/kg four years ago, but the NZ dollar has been devalued by 35% since, and they're now 8.5NZ$/kg , how much more expensive are they now in the KOW compared to four years ago??

Could it be the result of a catch back trend on margins ?

The tightening of import custom duties and activity taxes together with greater volume might have helped to professionalize businesses from the like of thai huot or Samuderas as well as less mass consumers oriented local importers.
Giving them the accountancy tools they needed to rise their margins hence helping them with the cash flow they need to expand, build multiple or bigger shops etc.. ?

I am under the impression that until now the local families managed businesses were happy with lower margins than their more mature western counterparts.
It is of course pure speculation but for exemple I don't hear about samudera selling any of their best investment properties to finance the huge new building at the back.

Draw up a list of what is more expensive:
consumer goods of many (even most) kinds
land and house prices & rents

Many salaries have seen no increase at all for several years (PUC being one conspicuous example)

Some good points BDS. The push for businesses to pay proper taxes is also inflationary.

Teachers salaries have been in decline forever, a trend set to continue as more foreigners travel abroad and don't mind working for peanuts.

It's just as well you didn't ask about the price of tomatoes. I have always been able to buy tomatoes for around 3,000 r a kg, and for the last month or so the price has gone up to 6,000 r and even 7,000 r at the old market. It's definitely not a seasonal thing.

Here you go: I paid 3500r for a pineapple today - skinned and ready to eat. Did I get ripped off ?

(Won't comment on the rest, but the bags do seem to be getting smaller. )
