What was your defining news story of 2014

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

What was your defining news story of 2014

Post by phuketrichard »

For me it was
MH 370

How, in this day an age, where the us can target a single person an place a drone attack at him an take him out
can a 777 airplane completely disappear? Not to mention the fuck up that the Malaysian goverment pushed on the world

http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/asia/ma ... index.html

Ebola would be number 2 on my list

http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/health/ ... index.html
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

MH370 is the most interesting, but the oil price free-fall is the most significant. Venezuala is now bankrupt, Russia is heading there, & the Saudis are dipping into their savings. Iran & Iraq are running huge defecits. Shale Oil & Tar Sands in the US & Canada can't continue production at these prices & alternative fuels can't either.

Thats up there, along with flight MH17 being shot down over Ukraine.

Then there was Russia taking Crimea with hardly a shot being fired...and the severe economic fiasco they are now dealing with due to low oil prices.

But the biggest story for me in 2014 has been ISIS all but taking over Iraq, and the Iraqi army's total and complete, humiliating collapse. An entire, ancient religious sect has been either slaughtered, displaced or captured and sold into sexual slavery without much consequence. 2015 should see ISIS's concentrated attempts to take Baghdad.

The kidnapping of almost 300 school girls in Nigeria, some of whom it is thought are being forced to act as human bombs. 200 girls are said to have been married off to their captors.

I would name the most "shocking-surreal ones"

mh370, koh tao and kir's exit.

For me it was the news about the US and Cuba. That has been anticipated for a very long time, and to see it finally happen.

The whole ISIS thing has also seemed like a pretty big deal, but it hits a lot closer to home with me while I'm in the Middle East.
