What was your defining news story of 2014

I have expected that it would reduce by fifty percent of the previous fee after the reformation.Digg3r wrote:Yes, I can see how this is truly the defining article of 2014Soumy Phan wrote:After a senseless reformation of unbeatable government the price of making passport is still pricy as hell.
The fee of making new passport is $120 at the moment while the GDP of Cambodian is about 1k.

Compare to other countries in the region Cambodia passport making fee is the most expensive one.Duncan wrote:$120 is in line with what most other countries charge, especially as it is now a 10 year passport. If you are going to relate it to the GDP of Cambodia. perhaps petrol [ and one thousand other things ] is also pricy as hell.Soumy Phan wrote:After a senseless reformation of unbeatable government the price of making passport is still pricy as hell.

Honestly I have no idea. I wish I can meet my prime minister personally and ask him why.LTO wrote:I've always wondered the real reason for passports being so expensive. I used to imagine it was part of the 'mirage' that Strangio talks about, though I'm not sure I was right about it. There were dictatorial restrictions on travel in the 1980s for Cambodians, just like most Cold War era commie countries. Then after the 93 elections, when Cambodia supposedly became a liberal democracy and new rights and freedom put in place, the new availability of passports was a way for the government to be able to say that Cambodians now had freedom of travel, while the prohibitive price meant that in practice freedom of travel was out of reach of most Cambodians, just like it was communist 80s. As for why it is still in place, I'm not sure if it is still to limit who can travel, or if it's a money making scheme, or if they just haven't bothered to update the pricing.Soumy Phan wrote:After a senseless reformation of unbeatable government the price of making passport is still pricy as hell.

I'd venture to guess that he doesn't know what a passport costs, let alone why it costs that much any more.Soumy Phan wrote:Honestly I have no idea. I wish I can meet my prime minister personally and ask him why.
Just FYI: I think the Phnom Penh Post, or perhaps the BlueLady Blog recently published a comparative cost list of all of the passports in SEA (or ASEAN) showing Cambodia to be the most expensive by far. But after a quick search, I haven't been able to find it.

Actually the fee of making passport in Vietnam is only $12. $30 in Thailand and $35 in Lao. Not to mention the length of getting our passport done is also the longest one.

We are so lucky we don't live in a country like North Korea that is controlled by a dictator.
The price in Pyongyang in January 2014 was $3,000, or as they call it “30 leaves.” A “leaf” is a North Korean slang for a $100 bill. Of course, you are supposed to give money in American dollars, since people conducting serious business try to avoid dealing with their native won, especially after the confiscatory currency reform of 2009.

Not that lucky. NK is a looney one-off aberration. Better to compare to semi normal countries like the rest of ASEAN.
Wouldn't it be ironic to buy one of those $3000 NK passports with counterfeit US hundreds printed by NK.

Re: What was your defining news story of 2014
To get this thread back on track, I want to tell about the most defining story that affected me last year, but never made it into the headlines. Not even page 19 of the Cambodian Daily paper.
I had this big accident where I broke the finger nail on my little finger, and found it impossible to pick my nose and scratch my bum for 2 months.
