What do the stranded barangs do?

There is no such thing as bad luck, just bad planning. Esewntially you are taking a bet every time you make a decisions. It will never happen to me so i dont need insurance means stupidity when you haventy got it, or a failure to properly assess the risk. if you can't be bothered to make a plan b and a planc then stick to sittin gin a chair watching tvYerg wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2020 2:45 amThat strikes me as a little harsh. I think Raven makes a good point that it is relatively easy for one to become destitute or stranded. His personal family case points that out quite pertinently. I have been on the wrong end of a run of bad luck, and I fortunately was able to call on family to help me out of that run, and find myself lucky to be back on level ground. I also had a bike in PP, and was more than lucky to not be collected by an imbecile at times. This time, luck was on my side, rather than Raven's bad luck to not be. I believe it is pretty easy to get stranded or destitute. a run of bad luck is all that's needed.
If you choose to move to a third world country without adequate savings, a country where traffic rules aren't enforced, and you choose not to buy heath insurance, and choose to ride around on a bike, then accidents and costly incompetent health care treatment are a very foreseeable result.
Life would be easy if we all had a shit-pile in the bank. But not all of us are that lucky. It would be presumptuous to presume that everyone is earning a stink-load of money and doesn't need to worry. I know of a pal of mine in PP who earns next to f***-all, but manages to eek out his own existence. He's hand-to-mouth at best. But he manages. And he is ridiculously happy to live so. I also have another friend who earns shag-loads of money. He's fit and healthy, but one of the most miserable barangs in PP I know. To each their own, Sparkle!!

Best laid plans, and all of that... I don't disagree with you, in terms of planning, but seriously, luck can be a factor. Yes, no insurance is an absolutely brainless thing to do. But you can't plan to have an accident, surely? Yes, the risk of an accident in PP is higher than most anywhere else, but it is pure luck whether it is your turn to be a statistic or not.

I highly doubt that I've been disembowelled or deprived of any essential content. Nor are you my mate. But you carry on, if it makes you feel good...Terry Fishsauce wrote: ↑Sat Mar 21, 2020 5:01 am
To be honest you have been eviscerated here by Sweet Lemon. You have to know when to stop digging mate.

Driving thru a green light and a semi runs the red light
Walking down the street and a drive by shooter opens up with a mac 10
Being on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17
Working in the world trade center on 9/11
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

However you want to call it, “bad luck,” “providence,” “fate,” many events are beyond the control of an individual.
Ask the retirees that had been told that their 150-year old bank can’t fail, after all, it had been there for 150 years. Yet Lehman Brothers did fail—after 158 years.
Planning and preparation lead to better results in many cases and should be a priority, but unfortunately sometimes there is nowhere to hide.
I am humbled by what is happening right now.

In my 21 years here I have already heard enuf from B(F)arangs pretending how " good" they are how many connections they have, how rich , how many this and that .....Yerg wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 1:03 amKiss Momma with that mouth? Uncalled for, simply because JB calls out those that can't/won't speak Khmer or even make the effort to try and assimilate. If that makes JB a "Fucker of the Super variety", then I am pretty sure he is sitting comfortably, nodding, and aiming a well timed "Joi Mai" in your general direction, with a knowing smile. What a puerile and pointless thing to say.alexvanlaar wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2020 10:12 pmGood 4 U, Superfucker!John Bingham wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2020 9:38 pm This is where the barangs who have never tried to communicate with the locals will lose out. Re: What do the stranded barangs do?
I have read your post and your experience with your family after you lost your job. My perception is that Khmer people distinguish between immediate family and people outside this circle. Nevertheless, even within the immediate family I have heard of surprisingly uncaring actions by Cambodian people. As an example, the children of a woman with some kind of health problem didn't pay for their mother to have diagnostic tests at Calmette, and so the doctors didn't really know what's wrong with her.Yerg wrote: ↑Sun Mar 22, 2020 3:27 amI highly doubt that I've been disembowelled or deprived of any essential content. Regarding your experience going to the province after you lost your job, Khmer people also assess based on their perception of the person's future earning potential . Even though you lost your job they probably saw you as a potential benefit to the family.
