My answer: none.

My country, the United States, permits guns to be bought in many States and jurisdictions as freely as candy bars. These guns leak out, gush out really, so that the land is awash in millions of them in the hands of all comers from Chicago ghetto gangsters to Sandy Hook malevolent nuts. School shootings and other mass shootings are as common as baseball scores. Without exaduration, you sometimes see more than 2 a day.

I prefer to expend my testosterone in the horizontal in a pleasurable truce with the rival gender.

For some country wisdom on the matter see the remarkably articulate redneck Southerners below.

a LOT of ppl die from .22 or .25 or .380. Contact shooters, held close to the bod. It's a crap shoot. I knew a gun dealer that kept a .22 freedom arms revolver, they're tiny. Had it on him at all times. A .357 or .45 might be responsible for more one shot deaths but they ain't no good if they're at home in a drawer. Heavy.
I'd keep a shotgun for home defense. Use my eyes and wits outside the home. Lotta ppl get killed with their own gun too. This whole idea is a bit silly to me. Sold my guns years ago. I will carry a SHARP knife tho. But you can cut steaks n such with that, so it's usefull.

For winter months in North America I carried a AMT back-up .45acp, the smallest 5 round .45acp semi-auto made. I used half special hot-load hollow points loads and half Glazer-Safety-Slugs that are a frangible round that blow up inside a body, but won't go through a wall and harm an innocent bystander/child.

In the summer when concealment was a problem (I had/have a concealed weapons permit), it was between a 32acp semi-auto with hollow point bullets and/or a very, very small quality stainless steel 5 shot revolver in .22cal. mag. While I don't recommend the .22cal mag as a defense weapon, I had special loads that would break into three parts and fly off in three directions inside a body. All of these weapons where made for close range and weren't much beyond 50ft. Although with the .45acp at 50 yards I could usually get 4 out of 5 shots into a body-mass target.

Another favorite and one of my favorite revolvers, sometimes in winter months I carried a stainless steel Charter Arms Bulldog Pug in .44cal special (not magnum, but the loads can be loaded to almost a magnum.) The 44 special is/was the forerunner to the 44cal mag and while in the same caliber it had less powder. The loads I used were special hollow-point bullets with all the powder that could be jammed into the shorter cartridge or the Glazer-Safety-Slug.

For hiking/fishing In Alaska I either carried a 5 round very short Russian bolt action rifle in 7.62x54R (about the same power as a 30-06 Springfield and used by Russian snipers and most of their army in WWI/WWII), or an AK-47 with folding stock 30 round mag or 75 round drum of Vietnam era armor defeating rounds ( I build/rebuild AK-47s) , or a 12ga. pump Ultramag Mossburg shotgun with the first three rounds of armor defeating slugs then 2 rounds of 00 buckshot to blind the bear if the rest didn't stop/slow him down. Don't carry a substantial weapon while hiking/fishing in Alaska and you may be bear Sh*t tomorrow.

BTW/ A S&W 500? Second most powerful hand-gun. One of my shooting partners has a very rare 45-70cal revolver. The 45-70 started life in the 1870s as a black powder rifle round they used to use to kill buffalo in the American great plains. Later it went to smokeless powder with a lot more power. I've shot it, but it wasn't fun. The picture shows the revolver, a 22cal cartridge, a clip of Ak-47 ammo in 7.62x39 and a stock 45-70cal cartridge. Look at the size of the handgrip and then the rest of the pistol and you get some idea of the size of the gun. Yes, a real "Hand-Cannon."

^Impressive hand cannon.

Sailor do you remember the stopping ft-lb of a .22 win mag? My foggy memory puts it up around a .38 cal.
