What if Money Was No Object?? Inspirational Video

Post by Jamie_Lambo »

After reading Rutigers thread about "Life is just a ride" https://cambodiaexpatsonline.com/asinine ... t8344.html

it reminded me of an inspirational speech by Alan Watts that inspired me to first break off the chains and start spending my life over here...

What do you desire? What makes you itch? What sort of a situation would you like?
Let’s suppose, I do this often in vocational guidance of students, they come to me and say, well, "we’re getting out of college and we have the faintest idea what we want to do". So I always ask the question, "what would you like to do if money were no object? How would you really enjoy spending your life?"
Well, it’s so amazing as a result of our kind of educational system, crowds of students say well, we’d like to be painters, we’d like to be poets, we’d like to be writers, but as everybody knows you can’t earn any money that way. Or another person says well, I’d like to live an out-of-doors life and ride horses. I said you want to teach in a riding school? Let’s go through with it. What do you want to do? When we finally got down to something, which the individual says he really wants to do, I will say to him, you do that and forget the money, because, if you say that getting the money is the most important thing, you will spend your life completely wasting your time. You’ll be doing things you don’t like doing in order to go on living, that is to go on doing things you don’t like doing, which is stupid. Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way. And after all, if you do really like what you’re doing, it doesn’t matter what it is, you can eventually turn it – you could eventually become a master of it. It’s the only way to become a master of something, to be really with it. And then you’ll be able to get a good fee for whatever it is. So don’t worry too much. That’s everybody is – somebody is interested in everything, anything you can be interested in, you will find others will. But it’s absolutely stupid to spend your time doing things you don’t like, in order to go on spending things you don’t like, doing things you don’t like and to teach our children to follow in the same track. See what we are doing, is we’re bringing up children and educating to live the same sort of lifes we are living. In order that they may justify themselves and find satisfaction in life by bringing up their children to bring up their children to do the same thing, so it’s all retch, and no vomit it never gets there. And so, therefore, it’s so important
to consider this question: What do I desire?

This is what Cambodia needs , motivational speakers , to get Cambodians, especially students to be inspired to say ,, Yes I want to do that. without having to say ,,, I don't have money to go to school to learn that.

Don't we have a Khmer '' Richard Branson '' in this country.

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

i have been to many countries to do business and this is what i have observed

china : give me your money and i will do 200% for you, end product looks 150% but works like 50%

vietnam : give me your money, end product only 75%, says what the fuck you want?

indonesia : give me your money, then ask for admin fees, then ask for security fees, then ask for meal allowances, end up paying 300%, still nothing

cambodia : i dont want your money, i dont how to do
Money is not the problem, the problem is no money

Thanks Jamie,

Yes, so very true, I can totally relate - being stuck in that 'never-ending cycle'

that is why I have chosen to make changes this year and break the endless routine of the emptiness that I feel in society here.

..... thanks for sharing

Responding to JLs first post, I'd say that as well as asking yourself what you "want", you should also ask yourself what you "need" to have a life that makes sense to you. Listen to yourself. What can I do to make this work ? Otherwise, you find yourself living a life that you didn't sign up for.
And if you have a partner, then you have to sit down and discuss this from time to time to make sure that you are both "looking together in the same direction." Playing the game of "if you could do anything, what would you do?" as a couple can reveal all sorts of desires of course. ;)

And you can't always get what you want, but you can get what you need: :Yahoo!:

More later on whether inspiration is what Cambodians want or need. Time for a g & t.

separating the desires of want and need are a great way of saving/managing your money etc in order to live a better life, i get by fine with my 6.5 year old laptop and my knackered galaxy s3 lol id rather spend my money on enjoying my life rather than needless materialistic possessions

Saying "yes, I can do that" or "yes, I know" doesn't seem to be a problem, it's the "learn how to do it later" that needs working on.
A tried and true example: "You know how to fix electricity ?" "Yes, I ... " bzzzzzzzzzzzzflash .
