What if Money Was No Object?? Inspirational Video

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. As long as the people who "do what they like", as opposed to doing what pays a reasonable/reliable salary, don't then bitch about paying back their student loans/credit card debt and later end up on the dole expecting others to pay for their existence, then I say "have at it". Live your dreams. Live your lives by inspirational youtube messages. No worries. But you are not in your 20's/30's forever, and you damn well better have accrued some money-earning skills at some point along the way.

As I recall, Jamie is an experienced bricklayer. He paid his dues with effort and hard work and saved some $$$ and NOW has the option of doing what he wants, knowing that he can earn money again when he needs to. But the inspirational video he posted isn't saying "pay your dues and then live a good life". That message is saying do whatever you like whenever you want and it will all simply work out for the best.

It won't always. And money IS an object.

I've come across many people who routinely do bad things in this world, and their justification for their nefarious activities is always "I got mouths to feed and bills to pay"...meaning anything is justified when basic survival is at issue. But if those same people put themselves in that dire position by previously refusing reasonably paying jobs that didn't quite tickle their fancy or excite them and now find themselves in a financial bind, I say f*ck them with a mop handle.

Here's some of the free-spriit "live for today" crowd who said "I'm gonna do whatever I want" and are possibly on course to live a short life doing what they want as opposed to a longer "life of misery" working a job they don't love:
- the UK singlets
- dirty feet pavement sleeper hippie guy
- teacher in Poi Pet with leg disease begging for money on the internet
how many others?

...live it up, lads!

this is how my life reflects what is being said in the video i posted...

i chose a job i thought id enjoy (with some guidance) i had to scrape by on an apprentice wage for a couple of years, then scrape by through the (double dip) recession, whilst wages were poor and work was hard, i enjoyed it, its creative and i enjoyed my freedom the job gave me, i wasnt stuck in some bullshit office with some cunt of a boss, i was free to do what i wanted, take days off/holidays whenever i wanted etc.
eventually i became a master of it earning a very good fee for my work, to which i chose to give myself even more freedom by only working a few months of the year in the summer then spending the rest of the year sat on some beach in Cambodia/Thailand drinking beer without a care in the world, im not rich and dont have much in the way of savings, but i live a rich life, far richer than my friends back home who are stuck in their dead end jobs miserable as fuck, stuck in the rut of what society has told them is "normal",
everyone is free to do what i do and everyone in the uk had the same opportunities i had, i dont come from a rich well off family, i went to a normal public school, i achieved what i have by choosing what path and roller coaster i want to go on,
i live with a fuck the future attitude because ive lived long enough to know that no future is guaranteed i make most of my opportunities as and when they happen in the present, id rather enjoy my life now while im young and able to get away with it
yes i had to put my graft in first, and worked through my fair share of winters lol
theres no real right or wrong, some people like the more settled life, others dont, i just know that everytime i go back to the UK how all my friends are envious about my lifestyle and the amount that claim they want to follow in my steps... but dont... hearing their sob stories just inspires me to carry on what im doing

Yeah, life is one thing when your a single, fit 28 year old and feel invincible and can't imagine a world when things aren't in your control. But there is another side and that ball keeps rolling (if you're lucky). Life happens, and young Jamie (et al) may very well find himself in his mid 30's with a woman and child to support and having to scramble to get it all together...and God knows what the world economy will be like when/if that time comes. And if so, the live fast/die young thing is out the window.

I'm not trying to pick on Jamie, he is just the one poster willing to express his views on such subjects. It's not that we disagree, really. I'm just pointing out that , yeah, those mopes back in Blighty working boring-ass office cubicle jobs may now seem like the suckers...and very well might prove to be the suckers who regret things later. That's a real possibility. But so is the possibility that young Jamie finds himself in a future medical and/or financial bind that leaves him in a state where he can't work as he used to and is now without the financial cushion that the boring office workers MIGHT have, if they were prudent. There is no right or wrong blanket statement to be found here... only possibilities that a responsible person should be well aware of and prepared for. That doesn't necessarily have to mean running back home and hiding from life experiences in a boring safety bubble, but surely some prudence and forethought is requisite.

I'm wondering if the difference in our points of view are from the difference in our ages (and therefore experiences) or the differences in our up-bringings. I've always been on the cautious side even when I was his age. I'm not saying that is a good thing. I wonder about it some times and how much that cautious mentality has held me back, if at all.

Good for you, I guess. From your posts, i gathered you smuggled and sold both illegal drugs from various countries and smuggled precious gems out of Cambodia by dealing with Khmer Rouge war criminals (who surely used proceeds from your payoffs to continue attacking and killing helpless Khmer villagers) for your profits. Not exactly the kind of life model other's should admire or emulate. You're lucky you aren't in a Thai or Cambodian prison.
