What happens if you refuse to pay the $3 visa photo "fee" at airport immigration?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. What happens if you refuse to pay the $3 visa photo "fee" at airport immigration?

Post by Cam Nivag »

Years ago, if you flew into Cambodia and didn't have a photo for the visa application, they would charge you $1.

Then they raised it to $2.

Now they ask for $3.

Of course, no one takes your photo except for the electronic photos taken at the immigration booth.

I was reading a tweet today from an Australian journalist who refused to pay $3, insisted on paying $2, and the immigration officer accepted it.

I've never seen this fee documented anywhere and have no idea if it is remotely official.

My question is, what would happen if a (non-black), Western passport holder simply refused to pay the $3 fee, on the basis that it's a bullshit, corrupt request for a bribe?

Would they really deport you for that? At their expense? Or would they relent and allow you in without paying the fee?

Give it a shot. That could turn out to be a pretty impressive piece of investigative journalism.

Really, anything to keep you from getting behind a camera lens again...your recent choices of local photo-docu subject matter has been leaving much to be desired.

Make sure to do the principled thing and give CEO the right of first refusal to the write-up. :thumb:

They also don't care to give change if you pay for your visa in foreign currency. First time I came (as a tourist) I handed over AU$50 and the guy wouldn't give me any change. A handy profit of about US$8 for him. Must be quite lucrative working there.

You do know that you can skip the fee entirely by bringing your own passport photos right? How many do you get for $3, 10?

they dont have to deport you,( means ur already in the country) , they just dont have to accept ur voa application
and since u not IN the country ur on ur own to fly wherever u wish....

If u dont have a photo of urslef for the application, the application is incomplete .
try entering laos without a photo, Nope,,,
at least Camboida allows u to bypass the requirements ( for a small fee of course)

Heard of a french backpacker trying to dodge the old 2 dolla / 100 baht photo fee by yelling at the immigration official , they stole the chip out his passport when proccessing his visa.

Dont fuck with them, especially the ones at Poipet.

Only a blowhard would presume that someone travelling to SEA for the first time would automatically think to bring a stash of passport photos

I research what I need to do to qualify for a visa before I spend money on expensive plane tickets. Do people travel without knowing for sure that they'll be let into their destination? That sounds strange to me.

I fly into Laos a few times a year and never bring photos. Costs USD 2.00 if you do not have any, still cheaper and less hassle than tripsing halfway across town for some photos.

If someone's biggest concern is whether they can pay the 2-3 Bucks than they have a real issue.

U'd rather pay $2-3 than visit a photo lap and have 10 pics done for the same price???
In Thailand we need photos for extensions, entry permits, registrations etc, no photo-- application rejected..

its not a big concern, its just called being prepared... :beer3:
