What happened during Chinese New Year?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

What happened during Chinese New Year?

Post by Samouth »

There are so many Chinese-Cambodian in Cambodia. So Chinese New Year is one of the bigger celebration in Cambodia. Therefore, what come to your mind when we talk about Chinese New Year celebration in Cambodia?

For me:

1. Many stores will be closed

2. Less traffic in Phnom Penh

3. More traffic accidents in the provinces like Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, Kep and Kampot

4. More khmer will be drunk on that day

5. There will be a lot of decoration with red stuff
បើសិនធ្វើចេះ ចេះឲ្យគេកោត បើសិនធ្វើឆោត ឆោតឲ្យគេអាណិត។

If you know a lot, know enough to make them respect you, if you are stupid, be stupid enough so they can pity you.

For me:

1. It's damned annoying when all the staff want to go home for Chinese New Year, but it's not even a gazetted holiday.

2. It's damned annoying that my family want to go to the province, while I have to continue working.

3. It's damned annoying that I'm stuck in PP, but many shops and restaurants are closed and the wife has gone to the province.

Why doesn't the government just bite the bullet and make it an official holiday. It would really impress the Chinese.

We lost count of the number of times one of our staffers mentioned it was CNY - ever hopeful we were going to can work for the week.
