Seeing the article about Ricky the Spaniard got me thinking about the other infamous incarcerates...

What ever happened to our favorite drunk French armed robber? Did he get out in the end and is back home or is he still locked up?

Good question. I remember that one as it was quite surreal.

The French armed-robber, Francois Chateau, was sentenced in September 2010 to 6 years in prison. Presumably he's out now.

To recap the old news:
French national charged with robbery, illegal use of weapon - Fri, 12 February 2010

PHNOM Penh Municipal Court on Thursday charged a French national with robbery and the illegal use of a weapon in connection with the robbery of a Phnom Penh bank earlier this week, a court official said Thursday.

Francois Chateau, 48, was arrested on Monday in Chamkarmon district’s Boeung Keng Kang III commune after allegedly stealing nearly US$300 from a Cambodia-Asia Bank branch in an armed holdup.

Court prosecutor Sok Kolyan said that if convicted, Chateau could face a sentence of between five and 10 years in prison for the robbery, as well as an additional six months to two years for the illegal use of a weapon charge.

City court hears case of birthday boy bank robber - Thu, 12 August 2010

PHNOM Penh Municipal Court this week heard the case against a Frenchman accused of attempting to rob a bank in February, with the defence saying the suspect deserved a lenient sentence because at the time of the incident he had been “disappointed” his parents hadn’t called to wish him a happy birthday.

Francois Chateau, 48, was arrested on February 11 after he allegedly held up a Cambodia Asia Bank branch in Chamkarmon district and stole nearly US$300.

Intoxicated, he reportedly ran into and broke a glass door while attempting to flee, and was arrested outside the bank moments later.

Frenchman Given 6 Years in Prison for Robbing Bank in February - September 9, 2010

Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday sentenced a 48-year-old French national to six years in jail for attempting to rob a bank in the capital’s Chamkar Mon district in February and for possessing an illegal weapon during the hold-up, Presiding Judge Sin Visal said.

Francois Chateau was also fined 1 million riel, or about $250, and ordered to pay 2,192,800 riel, or about $550, in compensation to Cambodia Asia Bank.

After yesterday’s hearing, Mr Chateau called the verdict unfair, citing the fact that he was drunk during the robbery and regretted committing the crime.

Good to hear he was released and is back home. Even for a drunk Frenchman, I always enjoyed hanging out with him.
