What DON'T you miss from "back home"?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

This. If I needed just ONE reason, it's the people. Sour-faced, paranoid people who take themselves too seriously.
That's kind of true. Depends where you come from but I agree with the gist of it. What I find depressing the early-morning and afternoon transit crowds... I scan all the faces in the metro when I go back and they're all grey, dull and tired. If you make eye-contact with someone, they quickly look away. So many people close to each other, yet so far away and isolated at the same time. It's kind of weird. Now I'm certainly not the smiling type... People have even told me I look intimidating or permanently angry, but seeing Cambodians smile at nothing certainly changes one's perspectives on life and it's simple (and free) pleasures. :thumb:

The depression inducing cold grey wet and windy winter days when it's dark when you wake up and dark by late afternoon. In comparison Asia feels bright and sunny most of the time and when it does rain I really like the contrast of short heavy tropical rain showers.

Coming from NZ the ridiculous smoking laws is my main pet peeve.

They are even trying to ban smoking in all open air areas so basically you can only have a smoke in your own home.

That and the fact we elected a farmer as a PM

Everyone seems to desire slack traffic rules enforcement ("I like going the wrong direction and being a bit high or drunk while going home at 3 am", etc). That is, until they get T-boned by a freshie boy on his moto or a Lexus driving, well connected lout going the wrong way down the street. Then you will get online to post a thread about shitty, inconsiderate local drivers and why don't the traffic cops DO SOMETHING?

I see the same thing on the MRT Line in Bangkok... maybe not as bad. Sometimes I wonder if it's just a "big city" thing.
The cedar roasted asparagus has good chew. I don't know how to enjoy it, so I'll Instagram it instead.

The things I want the cops to do are simple... don't let people clog the street with parking, stop people from blocking a roadway at an intersection when they obviously can't go forward (in the US we call it "blocking the box"), and make people turn on their headlights at night.

That's separate from how shitty and inconsiderate local drivers are. Mostly because I think them being inconsiderate is so self defeating. When they block the box like described above, EVERYONE is fucked, them included.

People in Barangland are always looking for a fight.
Last week, I was driving my car and this bus decided to pick up passengers whilst blocking both lanes of eastbound traffic. Cars were lined up into the intersection. There was a lot of honking going on, me included. This Latin gentlemen pulled up next to me in the westbound lane and said:
"Why don't you just shut the fuck up?"
I said, "Look at how he's blocking both lanes. Look at the cars backed up." I don't know why I even acknowledged him.
"You have a point there," said the passenger in his car, another (probable) undocumented visitor, and his baby mama.
I look into the back seat and there is their spawn sitting there, maybe a 10 year old aspiring freeway strawberry salesman.
I wanted to say something back to him, but the only thing I could think of was to tell him that future gangbanger in the back will never make 18 being taught by (unless verified by Maury it is inconclusive) his father to challenge and swear at random drivers. But I just drove away without saying anything else.

I still want a pellet gun and shoot every damn person driving with their brights on all the time... wait this is about back home lol

Honestly I can't think of much that I DON'T miss, I miss a lot but there much better stuff here. The people, language and the way of life. I've bought land and now just deciding how to get good internet out in the province to make moving out there a reality.
