What does true love look like?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. This is what i have learned and been told. The reason that hi Crucifixion was special, because he died for us (sinner). He had been crucified to save us from sin. His father (God) sent him to save us. His blood flow by being crucified saved up.
I get that part, but there were other mere mortals crucified right next to him that very same day. I never understood how one person's crucifixion was "to save me from sin" and all the other thousands of crucifixions carried out by the Romans back then meant nothing whatsoever. If Jesus was the only one ever to have been crucified then you might have a point regarding the significance of the event.

It's like if Jesus and I were both walking barefoot down the beach and stepped on broken glass partially buried in the sand and cut our feet open, only to have Jesus say "look everyone, I've cut my feet on broken glass to save you all...it's very, very significant that I did that". But I'm still bleeding on the beach with cut feet and it was just something that happened and no one gives a damn...and they don't talk about me stepping on glass 2000 years later. Talk about favoritism/nepotism.

This is also what i don't understand. It is not really logic that someone can help the rest by being crucified. I have met a few atheists and they all said the same thing. However, Let's see if Jesus does come back to the earth one day. By the time, it will be too late for me to baptise. I will be forever in hell. I can't imagine, If My boss would sack me if she saw me discussing about Christianity.

He neither took his own life nor was in a suicidal state of mind. He expressed fear and doubt, and in that fear begged he be spared his father's plan. But in the end, like a good soldier, he did his duty, and saved us all, if you believe that last bit.
Thanks for your perspective - that's helped clarify my thinking on the clergyman's comment. I wasn't happy with it, I just couldn't put words to it. I guess the one difference with JC is that he had the power to choose/change the outcome, whereas a soldier would be fighting towards an outcome that includes not going home in a bag. I wonder what it is in the human psyche that reacts so strongly to soldiers/heroes knowingly choosing to die for others - whether it comes from the crucifixion.

The significance was not in the execution, it was in the executed. It was a symbolic act related to the endless bloody sacrifices of the OT that were never quite good enough. Christ was not like the thousands of others crucified in that period, or the two beside him - according to the good book he was fully man but fully God, without fault despite being subject to all the temptations of young Jewish men of that time; probably the last person on earth to deserve such an execution.

That irritates me. Christianity SHOULD be questioned and discussed - anyone who pressures you to just blindly believe without question should be watched very carefully, as this is how people use religion for control.

I am a little puzzled. Jesus says to the thief next to him on the cross he will be with him in heaven this day. Then he takes 3 days to rise. Should he not have said "See you in a few days...." ?

That's a good question.
