What are some good and bad names for a half Cambodian baby?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Agree with an earlier post about 2 names. if you give an english (or country of your choice) first name and Khmer second name, then in khmer it will be written

family name, first name second name and Khmer will automatically use the khmer name.

In other countries it will be written first name, second name, family name and people will automatically use the first given name.

My son is named Jay for western name and Kavi for Khmer name both easy for speakers of the other language to handle

As someone who grew up with a foreign name, I'd say it doesn't really matter. It annoyed me as a kid because no one could write or pronounce my name (if they saw it written down), but I got over it. It's annoying as a kid or teen on the first day of school, but it also becomes part of your identity and you appreciate it when you get older. I don't mind it now of course, and I actually appreciate that my parents gave me a name which reflected both their cultures. So if you name her Kanha or whatever, on the first day of school her teacher will call her KAN-HHA or something, but her friends will know how to pronounce it and it'll be a talking point when meeting people. Same goes if you name the kid Bruce or whatever in Cambodia.

I remember reading a few articles back in the day based on people with ethnic sounding names and the amount of times they were called in for a job interview in the States. The study showed that people w/ more ethnic sounding names didn't get called in nearly as much as people with American/western sounding names. I also have an ethnic or different type of name and agree w/ the person who said as they got older they appreciated it more and can be a conversation piece. I remember I was talking to this black guy I was an acquaintance with and he just had a son. I asked his son's name. He told me Sven. I started laughing but he explained his rationale.

Inter-related. Some ethnic names have a positive connotation as opposed to others. It can be emotionally draining to make everything about race/ethnicity but there seems to be a connection.

African American and Asian job applicants who mask their race on resumes seem to have better success getting job interviews, according to research by Katherine DeCelles and colleagues.
