What affect are the power cuts having on businesses?

Post by IraHayes »

Interested to hear how the power cuts are affecting businesses. Running generators for your power for 6 hours a day to be able to open must hit their profits in an already tight market.

Or not?

Huge impact on small Khmer businesses in Sihanoukville anyway. One example: Our neighbors run two businesses from their home/shop front. He washes motorbikes and she runs a beauty salon. Well, shit, no water and no electricity in the daytime means they have no more business.

Thats just one example because I was talking with them today, but the printers, internet shops and even cafes are all feeling the pinch. Who wants to sit in an over-heated cafe to cool off ? Not to mention that the cold beers are getting warm.

Here at the moment, it is really (at least) 6 hours a day without power for most of Sihanoukville. I'm sure it's not so bad in PP, but even several hours a day without fans or A/C must be impacting businesses.
Any answers from business owners either in PP or elsewhere ?

They are beautifully lit up like giant technicolor webscreens for people on acid. :rave: Fantastic.
Gives you something to watch in the dark. :head shot:

Two of my kids are getting sent home from school when the power is out.

At work, in a nice modern office in a nice modern building with no backup power, some of the guys go to the Amazon Cafe down the road to use the free wifi and A/C. Some of us just sit around the office or outside doing next to nothing. Can't say I've achieved much in the past two weeks, but hey, who builds a nice new office building with no backup power facility.

A Khmer friend told me that Eurotech (I think?) factories are running out of drinking water in Phnom Penh and unable to produce enough to meet demands.

Sounds like snooky used to be around 2012. They coped well enough then. Even in pp used to have powercuts almost daily. We used to joke it was whenenver the government threw a party

By napkin calculations we're spending an extra $150 to generate our own power with a petrol generators which were $1700. It would have been cheaper had our diesel not been nicked since diesel is cheaper to buy and the generator cost less to run.

It's annoying but not the end. What has been the biggest concern is the overcrowding of the city to the point we're unable to make deliveries in an efficient manner.

Google translate says,,,,, you are unable to find a parking space so you double or treble park , adding to the overcrowding in the city.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

I was actually thinking of the time it takes to just reach the location, but I suppose what you said is also true.
