Welcome to Cambodia Expats Online!
Re: Welcome to Cambodia Expats Online!
Phuketrichard! You got deleted "over there"? A new low. Saying the place was "lame" was one way of looking at it. I can think of other colourful words (I feel the "delete" hammer coming ).
To me it was a minefield every time I ventured there. Many threads died under relentless sniping and juvenile oneupmanship. Good posters stopped showing up long ago after complaining publicly about the site's tailspin over the last couple of years. A real shame. Months ago I simply stopped going and maybe PR's 8-10 month timeframe is fairly accurate. Although I think the site has never really stood on the high ground.
But in a more positive tone . . . I can feel this is a friendlier environment largely due to the organizers' start line declaration that the worst shit stops here. Amen!
Cambodia needs a good expat forum.
Best of luck to CEO's organizers.

What's the scoop on the origins and operators of this forum?
Uppermost questions in my mind...
1. Guys who have lived here long enough know who the operator, allies, and affiliated businesses are of the biggest forum are (were?) Is this a reincarnation of same?
2. Was that other nasty forum sold and why?
3. I welcome a little frankness. The purpose of this forum is, I presume, like that of the other one - to make money. Nothing wrong with that. I welcome profitable enterprises. If they serve a social and educational purpose as well, so much the better. But spare me the altruist statements.
4. Is there a core group of expat businessmen who are 'fluffing' this forum with brief/uninformative replies to create traffic for purposes of boosting numbers to present to potential advertisers? Nothing wrong with silence instead of no practical comment. I mean from the journalistic rather than commercial perspective.
5. Will investigative, critical or otherwise informative articles or regular contributors be *paid* somehow for contributions other than editorial?
6. What will be the editorial slant of this forum be? I find it interesting to see overt slants to the big forum (anti-American, pro-drugs, anti-prostitution) and a witty magazine (very anti-American, pro-prostitution) versus an NGO-sponsored newspaper (pro-American, anti-drug, anti-prostitution, anti-ruling party).

I bet Georgina put more thought into that one post than the two CEO owners put into the rationale behind starting this forum. They did it because they could. The rest of us post here because we enjoy it. If the owners find ways of making money off this site, then good luck to 'em. I post what I want based on what interests me. When the enjoyment stops, I won't post here anymore. I am happily oblivious to anyone else's ulterior motives for posting on here.

Nope. In fact said individual hates the general and I... and this forum.
2. Was that other nasty forum sold and why?
He couldn't handle the competition... lol. The new owners and us get along fine.
3. I welcome a little frankness. The purpose of this forum is, I presume, like that of the other one - to make money. Nothing wrong with that. I welcome profitable enterprises. If they serve a social and educational purpose as well, so much the better. But spare me the altruist statements.
The purpose is to have a forum. If we make money, after expenses and reinvestment, we're using it to throw a party for the forum members. So essentially the purpose of the forum, financially speaking, is to get everyone drunk for free.
4. Is there a core group of expat businessmen who are 'fluffing' this forum with brief/uninformative replies to create traffic for purposes of boosting numbers to present to potential advertisers? Not on our behalf. And "fluffing" is more to keep the conversation moving so members don't get bored and wander off and then forget to come back. Which is a very real problem, from a forum psychology perspective.
5. Will investigative, critical or otherwise informative articles or regular contributors be *paid* somehow for contributions other than editorial?
So far we have no paid authors. We really don't have the revenue for it. Those ads at the top are still free to the advertisers because I've not had time to set up the payment system/etc for them. The adsense ones at the bottom generate almost enough to cover hosting expenses.
Depends on the users... as a forum it's up to the individuals for the most part. I'd like to think it will be a mix of many slants.

Okay I admit it. I am a highly paid publicist for Murray Head, and cashed in on a huge payday with my brilliant, insightful article on the song One Night in Bangkok, to be found here-----> https://cambodiaexpatsonline.com/thailan ... t2296.htmlGeorgina wrote:Uppermost questions in my mind...
