ways of learning to speak, read and write Khmer

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. ways of learning to speak, read and write Khmer

Post by curiosity »

Hi folks,

so there are Khmer language courses at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Gateway and what not. If you want to be able to speak Khmer fluently as well as be able to read and write the Khmer script, which language school (or private tutor, or a combination of both) works best?

The best approach is total immersion. Move to somewhere where no-one speaks English.
And watch a lot of Khmer tv.

A friend of mine went to Gateway full time for a little over a year and loved it. His level of the Khmer language is pretty impressive.

How much was that, I'm usually OK with languages and can understand and speak 3 (well I can get by) but this one has really got me, I think its because of the way its written, its like deciphering hieroglyphics.

Iv seen quotes around the 300 dollar mark for three months, is that about average or over the top.

I don't now how much he paid exactly, but he said it was a bit expensive, but worth it.
