Water Festival

Post by LTO »

Sitting curbside at the Water Festival.

I've been to more than a dozen of these and, to my memory, this is the thinnest crowd I have ever seen. It's still eary, it's the first day, it's hot and my memory isn't perfect, but this looks really light.

But there is tons of security. Coppers of several sorts all over the place. Brass walking the riverfront inspecting the ranks. Though many seem more prepared for battle than crowd control. They've got their machine guns in cozies, and are wearing webbing packing a dozen extra clips...for what?

Be interesting to see if the crowd thickens up for the fireworks or perhaps tomorrow.

I wonder the reason. Fear from Koh Pich and the fireworks accident? A dying tradition after a three year absence and the iPhone generation? Or am I just wrong in my assessment of the crowd?

I agree , definitely a thinner crowd as yet. I did notice that in the past traffic was barricaded at the end of street 110 to r/side , but not this time. Also City busses are stopping at the railway station not the night market. Moto's wanted 5000r to go to r/side, and were told f/off.

I've not been able to get down there yet, child minding all afternoon so far. Hopefully will get down there in an hour or so.

Does anyone know the state of the roads? The Woman reckoned that they would close the roads up by Chroy Changvar bridge.

I hope it doesn't become another exercise in bong thoms walking on the little people.

I bet they won't stand as close this time.

I just left. Crowds thickened up at the end of the day, but still way below previous years IMO. Easy to stroll up and down the riverfront and walk out. No major traffic jams on the outside either...well, at least of 6:15PM.

Talking to the cops there and they feel that the crowd should be bigger tomorrow.

Surely they will learn from last week's mishap.

Oh hell, and maybe they'll just go ahead and have fireworks on a bridge.

Who knows.

I went down to the riverside about 7pm last night. Must have been some brass around the palace end of the strip as there was a heavily armed military presence. All seemed a bit tense - machine guns everywhere, police in all available colours and I noticed a brigade of men in black suits. Just like MIB! Same suits that the security dudes wear at St Tropez, so maybe they got a gig... I figured if anything bad was to happen that they would just neuralize the crowd.

I headed off in the other direction and when I came back about an hour later almost all of them had gone.

Lots of people and a bunch of brightly lit boats to see. I might post some more pics later on.
