I Was Held Up at Gunpoint in Broad Daylight in Phnom Penh: Warning Tale from a US Man

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Big difference between credit and debit! My credit cards all have chips; none require a PIN to be used.

PS: showing ur passport will NOT allow you to exceed your cc spending limit!!!!
When i was in thailand i had and still have a bkk bank account.i could only ever withdraw 20kbaht from machines with my uk debit card(i have not had a crecit cardfor many years) but if i took my passport and debit card inside they would run it through the computer and i could withdraw way more than my limit back home.occasionally it flagged for a check and i had to wait and verify over the phone to a rep from lloyds bank uk.but that was only 2-3 times out of maybe a dozen of more transactions.

Card scam or a wild night on 136 involving taking home several ladyboys. either way this never happened. The rare occasions I recall of guns being used in Cambodia are a quick stick up and run away, a bank job or a drunk shooting. His story is fanciful and belongs in the crime fiction section set in 1998, although that would make the ATM part untrue....just like the rest of this story.

I am NOT referring to debit cards ( which indeed have a set limit)
but Credit cards,
which have a specific limit an can not be exceeded,(I have us cc and have tried to exceed the limit an never was the transaction approved)

Debit cards, you set your daily limit, so of course you can have it exceed what you initially set with a call to the bank
....still have a bkk bank account.i could only ever withdraw 20kbaht from machines with my uk debit card....
What does having a bkk account have to do with using a UK debit card?

What im saying is my uk debit card has a set limit. 500£ from atms and if i used it in bank abroad i could withdraw more. From an atm no i couldnt withdraw more.and my bad i didnt notice you was only talking about cc. Which in anycase when i had an mbna one years ago i could exceed the limit by 10%

So, I learned something new today. Thanks!

well not exactly true;
all credit cards have a security code on the back (visa/mc use 3 numbers)
which are ALWAYS asked for on any ONLINE purchases, (hotel bookings, airline bookings, amazon etc etc)
You dont need a pin when you make a purchase in a "real" store.

PS: most new debit cards also have chips

LOL just now on Norodom, a guy on a moto commented on my shirt and asked where I was from. I was trying to work out how I could work the Manila Chief of Police into the conversation, but before he could get up to "oh my sister is moving to Australia" I just said "sorry I don't wanna play cards, I gotta run", just to remind him that (some) people are wise to this scam.
