Warning of Adenovirus

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Warning of Adenovirus

Post by Francis »

Every year around this time we have an outbreak of conjunctivitis. It happens always towards the end of the rainy season. Last year e.g. was extremely bad. This conjunctivitis can be either viral or bacterial……..last year it was viral……a virus called “Adenovirus”.

I saw already the first cases of conjunctivitis running around here and usually it spreads quickly. At this time I cannot tell whether it’s viral or bacterial. The infection is highly contagious and can be spread through person-to-person contact, picked up off surfaces and spread by dust.

If it is a virus: there is no virus-specific therapy, serious adenovirus illness can be managed only by treating symptoms and complications of the infection.

If it is a bacterium: the organism has developed a resistance to most antibiotics and is difficult to treat……the usual given “Maxitrol” eye drops don’t work.........you definitely will need a 3rd generation antibiotics (e.g. Cefixime).

Avoid dust, person-to-person contact, do not touch your face or eyes. Wear sun glasses to protect you against dust. Wash your hands every 30 minutes with an antibacterial agent.

Anyay.....BEWARE !!!!!........this stuff can make blind !!!!!

Und der Haifisch der hat Tränen
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht

In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist

Good warning. One of the 440 guys had this last year, he was miserable for a month or more. Once it's in a family, especially one with small children, everyone is getting it, and reinfection is likely.
