Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. Visiting southeast Cambodia

Post by ianfrank »

We would like to visit Southern Cambodia this December and it appears spending 2 nights in Kep/ Kampot and then 5 nights on Koh Russey (there's a new hotel opening there in November) and then another 2 nights on Koh Kong might superficially cover the area as we do not have time for more. We are so fortune to be able to have a driver and guide but if we are not inventive they would be happy simply to drive us from A to B with little attention to some of the temples, villages and sights to be seen.

My question. The travel agents all propose a 6 hour trek from the base of Ta Kiev Mountain and back. Does anyone, knowing this area well, have another suggestion? Would it be a shame to spend 6 hours walking back and forth? Perhaps there other more meaningful suggestions in the short time we have available? Any comments and suggestions are gratefully awaited with many thanks.

December is rainy season, but even then, 6 hours in temps of around 33C and 80% humidity?

Loads of other more sensible things to do/see

Kirirom park closer to Phnom Penh has nicer walks, many of them around 1 hour

Mangrove walks in Koh Kong approx 1-2 hours

Longtail boat rides, 1 hour, $15

Kayaking...rent bicycles/dirtbikes, go to beaches

Down by the coast, yes, iirc, we had rain every day over an 8 day holiday, but maybe unusual?

OP, December is not rainy season. But, just like anywhere else in the world, the chance of rain is always possible.

December and January are the height of the cool/ dry season. The coast gets a bit more of a year round soaking but it's still drier in December than August for example.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
