Echobeach wrote: Sat Oct 07, 2017 4:27 pm I have been following this page for months and thought i had figured out all the appropriate visa information i needed and suddenly all the rules change .

I have been considering a year in Cambodia to ascertain whether i could live in Cambodia permanently .

I have e.mailed the Consulate / visa office here in the UK ; I assume it is in London , but they process applications , and asked plenty of questions . A week later , no reply at all . Is that surprising ? . I suppose i would be applying for an E R retirement visa and asking permission to stay for a year but i need clarification . Age ? Proof of funds, proof of 'retirement' .

It seems the consulate in London doesn't know or understand what the position is either !
At least in the UK, you are in a position to see a clear outcome hopefully at some time soon. And possibly apply for the visa with the correct paperwork there.
If the local Immigration officials aren't clear on any of this, the Cambodian consulates and embassies will know even less.

Echobeach (far away in time) will need to get the regular $35 visa. The ER or EB will come into play when he applies for an EOS, so he can look into that when he gets here.

My situation is I took time out to travel and try to become a paid photographer . It was only supposed to be 3 years but drifted to 8 years , and whilst I had a great time i didn't make much money . I came back to the UK where i own my small modest property and thought that i could get back into paid employment , but a year later i have had 1 interview and didn't get the job . So whilst i own my home , I am constantly paying out on bills and no income . I still have too much in savings to claim Social Security benefits . Renting out my home would provide me with about $800 after agent fees . Hence pondering going back off on my travels . I suppose I won't get a clear cut answer and will have to make a decision and wing it .
congrats on making a living at Photography, although the 80-90s were good, this past 15 years have sucked for me. :beer3:

That pretty much mirrors my situation. 10 years ago after first 6 months SE Asia travel, back in UK hoping to work 6 month uk. live like a king in Asia rest of year. Not one interview in 20 weeks. Kept house, sold car, motorbikes, all my shit auctioned on Ebay. Now back at the start wondering where next.

Double sided mirrors......Had my comfortable modest life in the UK. Own business, but ended it after ten years of work getting less, but hours and paperwork increasing. Having a mortgage and savings is good but doesn't help when you are looked down on by the benefits system. You are unable to make any claims or help with prescriptions and so on. Use your hard earned monies for self support. I took the gamble, sold up and came here. Life is what you want to make of it.

My life at the moment . Has too many savings to claim social security . Has a house i own and one that cost me £2000 in roof repairs this year . 13 years until i can claim my meagre pension . I still have eight years to pay into NI contributions . But endless job applications and nothing . I will figure it out and know i am much better off than millions of people but , yes , i feel stressed and unsure .

I can fully understand your situation. I was there myself, also with only small savings but dwindling away every day. I owned my house too. We go to work to improve our lives and lifestyle. I could have rented the house, but I decided to sell and start a new life, thinking if I had a safety net I would not be 100% committed. I don't know if that was a good move or not. As for pension I have 12 years to wait. But you do know you only have to pay NI contributions for 30 years to qualify for the UK state pension. If you are looking for advice about a move here! I would say think about it strongly, what you have gained and what you could lose. Myself I am happy with the move, but there are plenty of obstacles to overcome, and they will start in the UK.

This was posted OTOF last night, for what ever it's worth:
Alexandra wrote:
It is reported today that DoI no longer cares about work permits for 6/12 mo EB EOS. They are instead demanding employment letters. If this is true and it lasts, it's good night for all of those who applied for work permits as freelancers/digital nomads/whatever the cool kids call themselves.

3 month extensions don't require anything for now but they are single entry and like I posted above people are currently not able to get even their first E VOA.

Bless

Both those posts sound like hearsay.
Unless that person has actually got one then I don't believe it.

I've just renewed mine a couple of months ago. Lol. (ER)

True but I'd like to think that a post by the fucking owner of a forum would carry a bit more gravitas and general truthiness.

Someone posted a request for clarification from migs which has gone unanswered. But to be fair, they've been busy debating the merits of holding a pissup at a girly bar so maybe he'll reveal his agent's info at a later date.
