Vacant land

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Vacant land

Post by Duncan »

Less than 25 km from the PP city center there is so much vacant land not being used. Not even as much as a grain of rice, a cow or a tree planted. In what other country would you find this much land not being used for some agriculture purpose so close to the city. Where are all those countries that talk about world food supplies and shortages.

One side of the road.

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Most likely someone is just doing some land speculation. Almost all large land purchases right outside the city are done for land speculation purposes.

Yep. Squatters will sometimes set up on them... but given how hard it's been to kick those off lately once they do I imagine the keep an eye on it to make sure they don't.

Almost all of the border land not in use is titled in huge parcels to people trying to sell it as "Potential SEZ" or "Great Factory Location".

I'm more curious about vacant plots IN the city centre. Some have been unused for 10 years. Not even a car parked or anything.

Land which was bought for pennies 10-20 years ago. No mortgage, so why sell? Sometimes the owners don't have enough money to build, sometimes they're asking price is ridiculous (classic) and at other times they're simply not interested/pressured to sell. It's all a waiting game and there are no laws which prevent that here.

A lot of the land outside PP is not suitable for crops, the dirt is sand/stone and it's also part of the Mekong/ Tonle Sap flood plain. if there's no wall around it then the land is probably as described above

Good points Bitte_Kein_Lexus. I just find it weird that they don't rent the land to someone. A parking area would be pretty simple as would some shacks selling food or phone cards.
