Tuol Sleng Guard Tells of Executions, Thwarted Rebellion

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. They were mainly in their late teens, I wouldn't call them children. Most were from the elite Division 703. After victory they expected some sort of improvement in their lives but were treated almost as badly as anyone else, a whole lot of them ended up incarcerated in S21 or on punishment duties farming at Prey Sar or in Boeng Tumpun where they raised livestock.

There's an excellent book by DC CAM about the division: The Khmer Rouge Division 703 : from victory to self-destruction

Museum photos of the horrific reality faced by S-21 prisoners during "interrogation". The spoilers are for the squeamish.

Of course I'd like to say I would NEVER do this. And as myself, right now, I hope I would refuse. But I admit I really really don't know. If you are an uneducated peasant in a culture which insists that you should always obey those who are in power, do you have the inner resources to resist the power structure ? Again, I'd love to say that I would be the exceptional being, but I can't be sure of that.

Good luck to those of you who are sure that morality would win against survival. I'd like to believe this, but I doubt.
But could you do that? Would your inner self allow it? Could you torture and kill children and innocent women? Honestly, personally, not philosophically, I don't think most men are capable of that, regardless of threat or precedent. Have I misjudged the real world, the hearts of men?
Quick answer LTO - just wrote a long post that I made disappear somehow; No I could not and would not torture anyone. But, I don't think that's because I was born a "good" person. I don't really believe that some people are innately evil. If I had been brought up to believe that torture was a normal way to behave, perhaps my mindset would be different. I honestly don't know.

I don't think anybody is brought up to believe the kinds of things that happened in S-21 or Auschwitz were normal.

more recent,
how about Guantanamo Bay?
Is mental torture worse or ... than physical torture?
obviously it would depend on if u require information or not

Is that the salient difference between Gitmo and Auschwitz?

torture done by sadistic people who thought they were superior ( Nazi's & KR) & drs (Nazi's ) experimenting vs torture to gain info ( Gitmo)

So are you saying 'Yes, the salient difference between Auschwitz and Gitmo is the difference between physical and mental torture.'? If so, I disagree. Places like Auschwitz and S-21 are in a different category than Gitmo. If you like we can explore the other (more significant) differences, but I would think it should be obvious to most. If not, it doesn't really address my point that people aren't brought up to believe the kinds of things that happened in S-21 or Auschwitz were normal.
