Is the Coronavirus Fueling Anti-Chinese Sentiment ?

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

I said already. Not perfect but in my opinion better than anyone could do.
Public servants, including doctors, must adhere to strict protocols. Did he report it the right way, i didn’t follow that closely? Tossing it out there in public to create panic is wrong.

In any case, if, as some believe, this virus is so contagious and scary, in the near future western countries will have many opportunities to show China how to handle such matters efficiently. It is very easy to criticize while it is in the neighbor’s house.

Informing fellow docs isn't creating panic. This is what I get from various sources.
On 30 December he sent a message to fellow doctors in a [We]chat group warning them to wear protective clothing to avoid infection.

Four days later he was summoned to the Public Security Bureau where he was told to sign a letter. In the letter he was accused of "making false comments" that had "severely disturbed the social order".

That sounds like a major f*ckup to me, especially if you watch this video in addition about patients treated for the virus in a hospital in Wuhan from Jan 1st onward:

41% of patients contracted the virus in the hospital, both patients (in the hospital for another treatment) and healthcare workers, because of insufficient protection against the virus. Exactly what the whistle blower had been warning about but was silenced for.

My guess is this wouldn't have happened in the 'free world'.

There was a link posted yesterday in this forum about Australian hospitals and how thousands of people die there every year from infections after surgery and 2 out of 3 doctors don’t wash their hands. All countries f*ck up on a regular basis.

Sorry to burst that bubble @Kammekor, I think every hospital has such issues: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-heal ... udy-finds/

I've spent perhaps one week of my entire life in hospitals, including my own birth and that of three kids - any second I don't spend there, or in doctor's clinics, etc. seems to have worked wonders for me so far. I know it can't last, but I swear like Tony Soprano's mother that hospitals are for dying, the longer you spend there, the more bugs you pick up. And just when you thought you got out, they pull you back in ... #DoctorsGottaDoctor :cash:

Maybe you didn't get the full scale of this cross-infection in this Wuhan hospital?
By mid January the patients admitted in this hospital had infected 40 (forty) healthcare workers in the hospital to an extend they needed to be admitted.
So it's possible more were infected but didn't show symptoms strong enough for admission. 17 patients in the hospital were infected.

This story is different from sick people contracting a (secondary) infection in a hospital (the 'superbug' story).

[edit]So out of all the people treated for the Corona 41% (57 people) did not get infected in real life, but in the hospital. That's cynical if a doc has warned for these infections but was silenced[/edit]

More reports of racial abuse from the UK:

Chinese people in UK targeted with abuse over coronavirus
Students and a restaurant worker in Southampton report racist incidents, prompting fears in the community
Simon Murphy
Last modified on Wed 19 Feb 2020 00.55 GMT

A spate of racist incidents linked to the coronavirus outbreak are being investigated by police, prompting fears among members of the Chinese community that they will face abuse if they wear face masks.

Chinese students in Southampton have been targeted with abuse, including one who had a stone thrown at them and told to go back to their “fucking country”, and another who was labelled a “fucking virus” by a passerby because she was wearing a face mask.

A Chinese restaurant worker in the city was also shouted at by a man who cited coronavirus, while a passenger in Portsmouth was reported to have been ordered off a bus by the driver because he was wearing a face mask.

The four incidents all occurred within the space of three days at the start of the month, according to a dossier compiled by the Chinese Association of Southampton (CAS) seen by the Guardian. Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed it is investigating the reports, with the force warning: “Any crime perpetuated through ignorance, prejudice or hate is unacceptable.”

Dr Michael Ng, who is chair of CAS, which has around 200 members, told the Guardian that hostility against the Chinese community was at the worst level he had known since he arrived in the UK 24 years ago.

“It’s quite scary when you are walking, as a student, to have people shouting at you, throwing stones at you and you are on your own,” he said.

“I have a lot of PhD students from China who when they come here they like to wear masks because it seems to be something quite common in China because of air pollution and other things but now they won’t wear masks. It’s because of the threat of being abused, of being called a virus.”

The incidents reported to the police, first reported by Portsmouth paper, the News, include someone who had stone thrown at them. The student was walking near Primark in Southampton’s city centre on 3 February when they were targeted by a man and woman. The dossier says: “The stone missed … Offender shouting abuse including the word ‘coronavirus’ and going back to the fucking country.”

Not just anti-Chinese..

A crowd in Ukraine threw bricks at buses carrying coronavirus evacuees from Wuhan to quarantine

Image

The buses were transporting 45 Ukrainians and 27 foreign nationals through Novi Sanzhary in central Ukraine. Nobody on board has been confirmed to have the novel coronavirus. They are being taken to a two-week quarantine as a precaution. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked the protesters to show empathy, saying, “We are all human.”

Its people infected with fear rather than the COVD-19 virus that's the real threat!

Ignorance can be scary. From DaveG's link above.
A recent poll by Ipsos Mori found 14 per cent of UK respondents would “avoid contact with people of Chinese origin or appearance”.

Some East Asians have reported members of the public trying to avoid them on public transport. Mimi Aye, a food writer of Burmese heritage, shared pictures of the empty seats left around her on a London tube train with “standing room only”.

In London’s typically bustling Chinatown, some restaurants reported a drop in business, with one food critic claiming: “I’ve never seen it like this before.”

“I think it’s really problematic the way in which [the coronavirus] has been racialised, so seen as something pertaining to Chinese and South East Asian people specifically rather than a virus that is indiscriminate,” activist Diana Yeh told Channel 5 News on Thursday.
The British tabloids can be proud of their contribution to the scaremongering and casual racism. This was published in The Sun a month ago:
On Friday, experts warned Britain could be swarming with "zombies" infected by the deadly coronavirus infection without even knowing it.
Sure, there may be undiagnosed cases of the virus in Britain, but calling people "zombies" is dehumanising and encourages the population to think that it's "us against them", when anyone from any ethnic origin can be contaminated.
All in the name of selling toilet paper. :o
