Who was that VIP today?

Post by newkidontheblock »

On the way to Ponchanteng Airport (Phnom Penh) today, I was passed by a VIP convoy traveling in the wrong lane of the road. Led by GD vehicle blaring it’s sirens, then 3-4 SUVs with regular plates, then ended with another GD vehicle.

On the tarmac, the Lanmei captain announced that the flight would be delayed by a VIP. Later announced that ADC had temporarily grounded all flights for 20 minutes, no reason given.
This was for the 1:30 flight to Siem Reap.

Who was that VIP?
And how close was he to the inner circle to command a military police escort and ground aircraft?

What's "GD"? You mean GRK? There are loads of convoys piling around the city all the time and you can't see who is inside. You can tell if it's a foreign dignitary if there is a foreign flag on one of the cars but otherwise who knows?
Silence, exile, and cunning.

As a person who lives outside the city but drives in everyday past the airport I can tell you this is super common. I see it at least twice a week. In the early mornings it's no problem. Irritates the shit out of me when it's in the afternoon and traffic is already fubar'd.

Lanmei was lucky they were about leave, and not about to land. I was on a flight from Hong Kong about two years ago and about 2 hours into the flight the captain told the flight would be in a holding pattern for 20-30 minutes because of a VIP flight coming in. I'm pretty sure this was a last minute decision from ATC because we burned quite some fuel (it was an Airbus A330 if I remember well) while holding for over 30 minutes about 30 km SE of the airport. Quite a few other aircraft joined us in the pattern, burning fuel out of courtesy as well.

It turned out to be the King, flying in from China, thus bringing airport services to a full stop for 20-30 minutes.

Welcome to the KoW.

I got stuck a few weeks ago when they halted all movement in and out of the airport. I believe it was for the Hungarian prime minister. Luckily I wasnt on a tight connection but some people were getting rather nervous

Just observe when there are loads of cops lining the roads for no apparent reason about 30 minutes earlier than the 'mystery guests' - then choose an alternate route.

You can bypass the airport in bandit territory opposite the airport (uncrowded) or veng sreng.

In addition, read the news as to when dignitaries are arriving or departing. - It's helpful.

There were military exercises around and outside the airport today. They were patrolling the area with radio gear.

Was the reported convoy somehow different to the almost daily VIP escorts? It is hard to say if the two are related.

I saw white Toyota Hiaces escorted by sirens but they had RCAF plates, not regular.
