The good the bad and the ugly

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

The good the bad and the ugly

Post by newkidontheblock »

The good: just got missus to sign up for CEO.

The bad: she’s afraid to post or reply because she might lose face to the expats.

The ugly: Khmer get routinely chopped down by the grammar police and publicly hung to dry. (Or mocked when their English is too good.). She got this gist after just a short while.

Is there any way to combat this perception? Maybe making it more friendly for all?

this has been the subject of lengthy discussion and it is agreed that the forum should be more friendly without moderation becoming overpowering.
unfortunately, even polite requests to disrespectful members to self moderate often result in a furious attack.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would attack someone if their English was ' too good'. And how would they know that the poster was Khmer? And, I agree with you, why should anyone care about the nationality.

From the language of your post ('just got the missus to sign up') it seems maybe you pressured her a bit to join. Why? If she's scared to post, why would she join? Just be sure it's what she wants not what you want.

Just report it. We have racists, Islamophobes, Nigeriphobes, paedo apologists, every phobe and weirdo you can probably list.

I also think cultural expectations play a part. Khmers are not direct, they avoid confrontation, and are generally very polite.

It must be confusing entering an environment where very few (expats) fit that bill.

Tell her it's just an internet forum and not to be concerned about losing face or taking it too seriously. People express their views and sometimes those views don't match other people's beliefs, it does really matter, not everyone will agree with what you say but you are entitled to say what you think is true. Don't be overly concerned about perfect English. English is more flexible than most languages and people will still understand what you mean.

Just make sure you tell her not to search your previous posts about her, the loss of face they would cause her far outweighs anything that could be posted by anybody else.
