What’s the big advantage of only having Khmer citizenship?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

What’s the big advantage of only having Khmer citizenship?

Post by newkidontheblock »

Just thinking about that poster who want to renounce his US citizen (and presumably) become a Khmer citizen.

Is there any real advantage in having only a Khmer citizenship?

Any thoughts?

You pay less airport tax.

That's about it.

1. I can buy any property I want (not restricted to being off ground level)
2. I can invest in land
3. I can travel throughout ASEAN without needing a visa
4. I don't need a visa to be here
5. I don't need a work permit
6. I get cheaper rates at hospital's
7. I have a laugh with customs guys when they see my passport
8. I get tax refunds at the airport
9. I can vote :-)
10. It's a great topic of conversation with the locals
11. I gain free assess to Angkor Wat, National Museum etc
12. I get a 10 year driving license
13. It feels good

That's about it. Other than that it's not that exciting!

How about:

1. No longer being treated unfairly with regard to taxes
2. Not being rejected by banks due to FATCA
3. Being able to legally invest in cryptocurrencies without having to lie about your citizenship
4. Not having to admit you are a member of the evil empire of the day

I can go on. The advantages aren't so much about having Khmer citizenship, but are more about being able to finally cast off the shackles of an American passport.
