Thousands of Birds Cross the Vietnam Border

Svay Rieng: Large flocks of birds are flying into Cambodia daily to feed near the international border gate with Vietnam, which is located in Bavet Kandal village, Sangkat Bavet, Bavet town, Svay Rieng province.

According to residents, more than a thousand birds are coming to hunt fish in the rice paddies close to the border because their food source in Vietnam has dried up. The Cambodian immigration police at the border gate say that in the evening they see big clouds of the birds flying back into Vietnam.

Asian Openbills - a kind of stork.
The most common of Cambodia's large waterbirds.
Numbers actually increasing, same with distribution.
One of the big success stories of Prek Tuol - one of the most successful wildlife stories in Asia. (the world even)

If you remember, all sorts of interpretations were attached to the sighting of a group of "Vultures" flying over Koh Pich soon after the bridge collapse tragedy. They were in fact Openbills.

Named because of the gap between upper and lower mandibles.
Some people predict they will become like Australia's famous "bin chickens", Australian Ibis now in pest numbers in the big cities.
Oh what a wonderful day- when Cambodians start cussing the over-abundence of any kind of large waterbird flocking around the garbage bins on the riverside promenade.

Hanno already did - in temple town anyway.

But i think that sentiment is universal.
They are the most "successful" bird species on the planet.

From memory, there are now about 20,000 Openbills breeding on the Tonle Sap.
All around the lake now, colonies of 1000 birds are not uncommon.
And breeding colonies are steadily expanding all over SEA
- Prek Toal probably has the No Vacancies sign up for Openbills these days.

so start thinking about designs for bird-proof garbage bins

So these birds will eat all the fish and kill the prahoc industry, and cause a famine.
