Re: This Female Expat Paid $75 For a Tuk-Tuk Ride Around Phnom Penh. Is She Paying a Bit Too Much? :-)
haha it was my first day in cambodia, we started off drinking in the Triangle Bar on the corner of Pub Street at lunchtime because they had a 10am-4pm happy hour of 35c beers, we then met the tuk tuk drivers outside our hotel and the cafe was opposite our hotel, ended up in Hip Hop at the end of the night, no wait we ended up in Xbar after that damn that was a long day, was a cracker though, one that we will never forget! (ive left out all the juicy stuff as its a bit off topic lol)Anchor Moy wrote:Not everyone has your social skills Jamie.Jamie_Lambo wrote:my first experience with tuk tuk drivers in Cambodia was in Siem Reap, and we all ended up going and getting pissed up in some cafe then went off to a KTV and partied with a load of KTV girls, was a great night, they paid for nearly all the drinks in the cafe, then when we went to the KTV and the whole night in the KTV cost me and my 3 mates $15 each, which included the room/girls and we drank at least one box of beer dont know what people are moaning about lolAnchor Moy wrote:It's not easy when you first arrive in PP.
The Tuktuk Experience; or Your First Tuktuk Ride.
Well-intentioned barang, first time in PP, addressing friendly tuktuk driver:
Hello - you speak English ?
Yes.
You know where to find --- ?
Yes.
Ummm, ok then.
Yes.
15 minutes later: Where are we?
Yes I know very well.
You, half an hour later, (shouting): Where you go ?
TTdr: No you not say there.
(Stop to look at upside down map that no one can read.) Ok, no problem, no problem.
One hour later, engine overheats, stop at garage.
TT dr: my friend fix, 5 minutes, sorry sorry.
Half an hour later : oh sorry sorry, fren busy. He come.( Friend gets into tuktuk.)
10 minutes later, tuktuk stops, friend gets out. Big smile from driver, "Fren hou(se)."
Then you leave in the opposite direction, back to where you came from. You are now driving in the wrong direction on the wrong side of the road. You start to panic. You shout the address of where you want to go at the driver in case he is hard of hearing.
He is.
Then, a miracle will happen and somehow you will get to where you think you wanted to go.
Driver asks for a huge amount of money that you will pay because you are just happy to arrive at destination ; you are hot, sweaty, and you need a beer.
Hahaha. Once the driver has left, you will notice that you are in fact 2 kms from your destination or at the wrong market.
Flag down another tuktuk and try again. Good luck. (And take a coldie with you. )
