Things you might not know about Raffles Hotel in Phnom Penh

Post by Samouth »

This is one of my nightmare about working. So far i still can't get over it. it was such a really bad experience and hard time I didn't expected to happen on me. Talking about Raffel Le Royale hotel, something five stars hotel you might think it is the best hostel and oldest in town and it might has a really good policy for staff. i did not consider it as a revenge writing how bad i was treated working there, but i just wanted to share with you guys to see if you guys think it is terrible.

Four years ago, i was studying in sophormore (second year) at the university, at the time, i applied for a position of waiter at Raffel hotel, luckily, i was accepted after i had been interviewed for three times. I first was interviewed by a Cambodian woman, after that with a Pinay and last with a native speaker of English, i couldn't tell by the time if he was American or British. I couldn't believe for such a really low position, i had to do a lot of interviewing. they fucking asked me a lot of questions. I thought because it is a five stars hotel that's why they have such a really strict procedure in selecting staff.

I was so happy as there were so many people applied for that position and i got it. However, my first day working was completely a nightmare. I was called to HR room and i was asked to sign on a very shitty contract. They said, because i am on the probation period, so i will only get $30 per month with two times free meal (breakfast and lunch). I accepted it as i really wanted to have work experience without thinking that i was being exploited. Guess what the job was really hard. i had to stand for 8 hours per day, i was not allowed to sit even though there was no fucking guests in the cafe and buffet room. I had to smile all the time and moreover i had been exploited by the old staff. They asked me to do all the things that i wasn't suppose to do. Working time is suck. I had to be at the hotel by 5:30 am. Not to mention, i was not allow to walk around the hotel. After i had been working for three days, i made a complaint to my manager, why can't i sit when there is no guest to serve. Then, i was fired the day after with a very stupid reason. They said i was so slow so they couldn't accept me to work any more. They also didn't pay my three days working.

Its a very uptight atmosphere in Raffles. Everybody clenching their butt cheeks. I didn't care for it and I wouldn't like to cater to such people that make you feel such a way.

To be honest i wouldn't stay long either even though they didn't fire me. i guess i wouldn't be able to work in such condition for more than a week. Please pay a lot of money to stay there and they pay shit to staff.

Those sort of working conditions are the norm for most hospitality jobs even in 'Western' countries, but the salaries are definitely higher.

I'm not sure what the room rates for Raffles are, but I guess they're definitely not cheap, so they should pay their local staff accordingly, I'm sure the Western managers are on a sweet all-inclusive package.

They've had a long and trouble history of exploiting their staff to the max.

Perhaps the exploitative squeezing of their staff as tightly as possible adds a certain of colonial cower and snap to their demeanor that can't be achieved by other means. The place does, after all, aspire to achieve colonial elegance.

Honestly, that sounds like a pretty easy job if you ask me. I've had jobs where the rules were much much more strict and the pay was basically minimum wage.
