Things you might not know about Raffles Hotel in Phnom Penh

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Normally I wouldn't - you're a fair enough bloke - but the censored comment was beneath your dignity, even if you were just making a point.

Personally, I'd rather be mistaken for Pete than his successor.

But that's just my opinion.

When are you defecting so you can bee free all the time, Playboy?

You've said a couple of times that entry level hotel workers have almost zero chance of upward mobility. My guess is that you haven't worked in the hotel industry, because you're absolutely wrong on this.
My father owned a hotel for two years, and he spent around 10 years managing game lodges in Africa. A close friend of mine was the GM of Royal Hotel in Durban, SA for around 10 years, my brother in law was GM of The Diplomat Hotel in Johannesburg for 5 years, and I worked at the top-rated business hotel in Cambodia, IHG, for 18 months on a short-term contract.

The stint at IHG is easily verifiable, buy me a wine and cheese voucher, LOL. I was in direct contact with all levels of staff five or six days a week.

My father was the first owner in the hotel's 20 year history to promote a deserving local above lower management, it was so unusual that at first the guy thought he had misunderstood. It transformed the staff's idea of work. (Unfortunately the war soon put paid to the hotel).

You are talking about Vegas/USA. Things happen differently here. I challenge you to see what percentage of senior staff at 4-star and above institutions in Cambodia started off as waiters, and how long it took them to get where they are.

I guarantee you will find two things:

1. The percentage is way lower than in the US or Vegas, which is the experience you have, and

2. The length of time it takes here is substantially longer if and when it does happen.

But anyway, we digress. $30/day is a disgrace, you know it, we all know it. People need to stop defending slave wages so Nike/Adidas etc can make exorbitant profits and sell you their stuff for $500/pair when it cost them $50 to make them. Share the profits.
