Their morbid curiosity

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Their morbid curiosity

Post by Jacket »

So, I was messing about on my tablet today when I heard some very melancholic piano music from me missus phone. When I wanted to see what she was looking at, I saw that it was a video which was just a montage of pictures of victims of rape, murder and other horrific crimes. I booted up Candy Crush on my tablet, gave it to her, took her phone and just flagged the video (it was on facebook).
I would like to say that it was for the victims and their families and that I was disgusted by how disrespectfully some twat on facebook treated these tragedies to get some likes. But in reality, I just find the extent that their morbid curiosity reaches to be utterly revolting. I know, "Freedom of speech yay!", "Censorship equals fascism!" (and all of that noise). But honestly, what's up with that? I've talked with her about that on several occasions and she just tried to explain to me that "Think about understand what happen". A bit of an unsatisfying answer, but whenever I ask her to give me something better, she's just like "You no understand!"

The die is cast - hopefully. There are WORLDS ! WORLDS between western ethics and Cambodian “understanding”. Their morbid curiosity is at anytime beyond comprehension. This what they do is so very insulting and the strange thing is that they know it (still they do it !!). Why ? (You’ll answer that question to yourself within a very short time I believe. Intellect usually does.) Welcome to their world of insanity and sadness and don’t become a part of it. The price you’ve got to pay is ways too high.

I think it's different when there's a soundtrack with it. Kind of suggests it's just entertainment.

But if it's just the brutal truth of what happened, including pics, vids, etc I have no problem with it.

I guess everyone has their own threshold of what should and shouldn't be seen.

The best news about it all is that nobody is forced to watch anything they don't approve of.

? That was a speech for freedom. Wasn't it ?
Question: Are stupid, brutal videos the only form of freedom that is left in the US ? Food for peasants. Yeah, that's all we need.

Let's be fair on the subject. It's only controversial speech that needs any protecting, naturally.

Are you serious ? Controversial speech is actually the only thing that doesn't need protection. Of course there are exceptions - if a member of the Ku Klux Klan, an extreme right winger or a journalist of CNN pipes up that would naturally require hardest forms of sanctions.

:ROFL2:
So stupid, dirty videos are fully acceptable. Controversial discussions about it, not. Perfect.
