His point is that speech that isn't controversial is by definition speech nobody is trying to silence. Your obsession with viewing everything through an anti-American lense does remind me of Francis.

Do you think we, as westerners, are in general less thoughtful about incidents of morbidity/mortality due to the fact we're generally protected from direct visual interaction with the real results of those actions?
My opinion: It's one thing to hear "200 people dead in a fire" and think "oh how tragic" it's much another actually seeing 200 smouldering corpses and letting it sink in how horrible their deaths must have been.
