The Worst Travel Guide to Cambodia

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

The book caught my attention on Facebook, where the author was trying to find a print shop so he could make copies of his book and "give" it to the street sellers to sell in order to get it circulated and hopefully talked about. Maybe the Starbucks marketing plan in Cambodia was true after all, LoL.

Here's what the author says about his book:

I lived in Cambodia for 20 months, living working and exploring. I have a lot of stories, far more then I could fit into this book, but this book will help you know more about Cambodia, its people, and the life you can enjoy here if you are an expat or just passing through.

The stories are not objective, I wrote these stories from my eyes, to teach, to show, and to remember. Some are beautiful, some are horrible. These stories will not replace a travel guide, but they will shine lights o areas never covered by travel guides.

Cambodia is a country in South East Asia that was once called the pearl of Asia. People saw great things here, people knew Cambodia would rise into a great country, and then everything changed. A coup, a civil war, an incredible poorly planned economic system that lead to one of the worst famines and genocide in history, where about 25-30% of the population starved to death. Cambodia bounced back from this cataclysm, but even so the past very much creates the present. Poverty and corruption are as common as rice and coconuts. Cambodia is a land that has nothing. Cambodia is a land that has everything. I love Cambodia. I hate Cambodia. But most of all I want to show you Cambodia for what it is.

This book is divided into a few categories.

1. Ordering food in Khmer

2. Crime and corruption in Cambodia

3. Tips for Siem Reap

4. Tips for Phnom Penh

5. Couchsurfing in Cambodia

6. Stories from my experience working in Cambodia

7. Cambodian cultural tips

8. Drugs in Cambodia including the very common “Happy Pizza” topped with marijuana.

9. And a few other stories to help show Cambodia for what it is.

Well, i like some of the chapter headings. But nothing on eating songbirds, or how to bargain for a meal after you've eatin it, or beefing up your CV by teaching English to captive Cambodian children.

Phnom Penhs red light district.
Grey haired Sexpats sit around tiny tables, nursing small beers and big appetites. Old men who want young women, young men who want all women. Their eyes jump from woman to woman. Warm chocolate skin, glowing smiles, winking eyes, short skirts and tight shirts. They play pool and sit around tables, scanning the men, looking for eye contact, seeking a few more dollars for the night.

She passes Phnom Penh’s only clubs, its raunchiest bars and dozens of other women, men and ladyboys looking for tonight’s paycheck. $5 or $10 a fuck, $15 or $20 if they are lucky, $25 or $30 if the men are stupid.

Everybody seems to be able to find Phnom Penh's 'red light district' but me. Where is this place?

I'd be interested to find a spot that isn't in the red light district.

I know Eric personally and he's a fine dude. he actually gave me the idea of coming to Kampuchea to begin with, so I'm thankful for that. This guide is more something for people who've got no clue about Cambodia what so ever I suppose. We're veterans around here and have experienced most of this stuff first hand. So I'd think about changing the target group. Maybe you'd be better of promoting the book outside of Cambodia. Thailand seems to be an obvious choice. I know loads of people who've been to Thailand multiple times (god knows for what, because fuck Thailand!) but never even came to do the touristy thing and look at Angkor Wat for a day or two. But then again, there are enough lowlifes in this country already. I don't want the Pattaya or Koh Phangyang crowd to come to this place aswell.

I hope he's not 'outing' places by name.

The last moron that did that put an end to Mikado Bar. (Sorry, most of you won't remember that one).
