Hehe I can be the laziest person, but Cambodian is the laziest nation in the world? Did the writer know all people around the world or just compare with few nations and assume it? When did they write it? Why Nike, Adidas, Samsung,... etc no factories in Cambodia? How many population in Cambodia ? About 15 million, Malysia 30million and Vietname 90 million. If a anyone need the high wage, will you assume him/her that the lazy person or because you want to employ people who can accept your lower cost for labour? Have the author ever worked in garment factories in Cambodia? Few years ago ( before National election ), the base salary of garment workers is only 90$ . They had to pay for food, electricity, water, renting room and save some for sending to families,.. etc.
Exactly. This is the same issue we have in the US. The upper class say the poor are lazy but how hard would you work for a little salary? If people aren't paid enough to meet their basic needs, they will never care about their work.

Thank everyone for understanding us. We are not lazy, but just sometime we don't have anything to do. For example, people who work at the rice field. After the harvesting, they will take the rest and eat all what got. This is just another lifestyle which is completely different from yours.

If you know a lot, know enough to make them respect you, if you are stupid, be stupid enough so they can pity you.

There is also the fact in Cambodia that so much lying around in hammocks, or just life in general, takes place outside for everyone to see.
Not like in the west where people pull their curtains or shut their doors and hide themselves away from public view when they want to be lazy - or they pretend to be working when they are really playing games on their computers or trolling internet forums. 8-)

I also think that westerners who criticize are probably jealous because they don't have a hammock. Hammocks rock.

I always thought that less active (perceived by some as lazy) vs. perceived industrious lifestyles could be directly correlated with geography, local climate and availability of resources.

Cut the power or turn the air conditioning in any office building or factory during a very hot spell in the West and see how productive your average worker is there. Cambodians and all peoples in hot climates are extremely hard-working, industrious and productive when they need to be...and less so when they don't need to be or conditions don't allow.

Still on the topic of laziness in work, MM.

I always see it as you do. These government overseas contracts in particular. You pay dirt cheap wages. Yes it's better then them being back home but it's work vs wage ratio. I've worked with locals where I'm at but a common group of races is Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi. Us on the outside looking in, they are lazy and incompetent. But you have to realize they get paid a month what you get in day or less, work harder and past the current job they have no prospect and have to search for a new one after. So why would they want the job to finish on time if finish at all. They want to ride their meager gravy train for as long as they can.

I have so many issues when someone asks on a project, "why is it taking so long?" The answer is usually throw more unskilled labor with the same goals as the current ones.

My current project we have 600 people that could be done with 100 skilled in less than half the time back home. They want to throw another 200 on the job because it'll be "faster".

Edit: Funny thing one time. I was told this new guy was an experienced "pipe fitter". I was like ok, what did he do as a pipe fitter? His answer I was told was he lifted pipe from the stockpile and put it on a rack for someone to weld. I nearly fell out of my chair.

Well done wackyjacky you understand the point of this thread...
