The small things appreciation thread

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

The small things appreciation thread

Post by Kampong Spooner »

There's a fair bit of negativity going on at the moment, so let's have a few little things which you like about the kingdom of wonder and avoid the over-paying for fruit, being robbed by a hooker, nearly killed by a RCAF plated SUV etc etc.

I just went to the shop with a handful of ring pulls with funny writing and got 7 cans of beer for them and an extra 1000r. Just pulled the first and 'won' another can.

I also always buy my food from the same few market stalls and don't get skanked (except for the orange skinned lady who rips me for fruit) and always get a handful of chillies and spring onions. I really like spring onions too, so it puts a smile on my dour face.

There are plenty of others too.

I really need a $5 body massage with steam room.

Can't wait.

Not being able to walk 5 steps without being offered multiple Tuk-Tuk and motodop rides. That's a good thing.

Since I learned to drive in the U.S., I learned that petrol was "supposed to be" about .25 a litre (.97 USD a gallon). The days of $5 getting me somewhere in a car are long gone, so whenever I fill up the Super Cub 50, I am happy because $5 worth of fuel still gets me a full tank.

EDIT: I also think that positive threads are a good thing, let's keep things like these coming so that we can smile after reading them instead of feeling more and more depressed.

I await his report of being abused for offering only $4 at the end of the massage.

There are times I wish your mental images stayed in your head - there's not enough mind bleach for some of the stuff you think... :)

It's always going to be the history here that leaves me happiest. The greatest civilization in the world left nary a shred of real evidence about what they did, who they were, etc. Sihanouk and Lon Nol's regimes barely left a trace either. And the accounts of the French period of colonization are contradictory and often total bollocks too. What a wonderful place where your history is obscured so you could, if you wanted to, just look forward rather than back.

Not sure I agree, Grinch.

The patronage system has left its indelible mark.

I do think that the horrors of the past are well hidden, and hopefully vanquished, by the smiles.
