"The sky is falling!"
"The sky is falling!"
So the Siem Reap expats are in an uproar because some expats in Kampot have been told they must procure work permits by July 1st. Rather than wait and see if it's going to be an issue in Siem Reap, they are organizing a meeting between the expats in town and the immigration department so they can ask how much they must pay to get in compliance with the law. It seems akin to pulling over and telling a traffic cop that you've been speeding and asking what the fine is.
My feeling is that if the government were actually going to enforce the work permit issue, they would announce it. This just sounds like yet another provincial crackdown that happens all the time and affects a few unlucky expats but leaves everyone else untouched. But the Siem Reap expats may take it and turn it into an actual issue by waving money around and asking whom they should give it to.
Am I just jaded or does this seem ridiculous?

I seems rediculous to me too. I liked the analogy 'It seems akin to pulling over and telling a traffic cop that you've been speeding and asking what the fine is.'

Definitely, seems like an over reaction and I think the authorities will be quite happy to collect some money from them when they point it out.

I'm with you, Giblet.
Silly move on the part of the expats organizing that in Siem Reap. I can only imagine all those expats involved have been year about a year, tops.
Also, I seriously doubt anything will even happen in Kampot come July 1st.
The officials in Kampot thought they could squeeze a little extra money out of people, and the expats there will prove them right.

Hell's bells, I'm aghast at the thought of a work permit/visa crackdown. Could it mean us Pattaya based sleaze balls could see our beloved filth ridden town flooded by thousands of educated Cambodian work permit dodging expats.
