The single most inappropriate, unreasonable, and offensive thing you can say to a Khmer person is...

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

The literal and implied meanings would be handy!

I've a couple of sisters-nearly-in-law, whom I've had to read the riot act to a couple of times. It would be really nice to be able to say something truly and irrevocably offensive to them when next either steps out of line. In their natural environment, they're mostly harmless, but when they venture out (meaning-our way, or joining us somewhere), they can become quite insufferable.
Even their own Aunt has taken to issuing withering looks and finger wagging.

Hmmm, maybe not that.

Something that implies selfish, inconsiderate bitch would be handy. Or would that be a worthy social ranking in family hierarchy?

Something along the lines of "Fuck You" Braver man than me to say it to a local. My missus taught me it, but it came with a warning never to say it within earshot of a local, unless you are ready to make the old two-step shuffle in the street.

Lol. All of you missed my joke. Perhaps it wasn’t as funny as I though it to be. I said the word was “wait”. As in expecting or asking a Khmer person to wait - such as standing in queue for their turn, waiting at a traffic light and not driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic to save a perceived 4 seconds, or being patient in any situation - is so uncommon and ridiculous that it’s unreasonable to ask them to. I can see the panic set in and the frantic behavior when they realize that they can not have instant gratification in any situation. Standing in line at a food counter is unspeakable - run straight to the front and give your order over the person who’s currently giving their order. Waiting for someone else in traffic or yielding the logical right of way is also totally unreasonable - drive diagonally across the intersection into opposing traffic, go over the sidewalk, and then cut everyone else off because they can’t wait 2.5 seconds for the other driver to move. Just a few examples that I’ve noticed.

Don’t know Khmer but when in Vietnam go for “dit mey” (spelt phonetically). It means the same as doh ma (motherfucker, fuck your mother etc) but is far more offensive. I used it once at some traffic lights in Saigon. I had my then girlfriends 12 year old son on the back and some bloke said doh ma to me, I assume insinuating that I was some gay pedo as I had a 12 year old Vietnamese boy on the back of my bike so I snarled dit mey at him and he lost it and gave chase for a few km. The boy found it hilarious, me less so.

I now live in Laos and it’s “see my mung” (motherfucker) but “he my mung” (your mums cunt) if you want to kick things off. But I haven’t had to use yet.

Funny that fight talk the world over involves some variation of a “your mum” insult.
