Is the honeymoon over?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Is the honeymoon over?

Here come Thais-style alcohol taxes (from the PPP)

Ministry finishes its draft law on alcohol

The Ministry of Health has completed a draft law on alcohol regulation, which will set a minimum drinking age, increase taxes on alcohol and place other controls on the sale, consumption and advertising of alcohol.

Dr Ray Rany, head of tobacco and alcohol at the Health Ministry’s National Centre for Health Promotion, yesterday said that Health Minister Mam Bun Heng met with representatives from other ministries and finalised the draft legislation on Wednesday.

“The inter-ministerial committee has finalised the draft law, and it is ready to be sent to the Council of Ministers and the National Assembly after that,” Rany said yesterday.

“The law includes items that make it illegal to sell alcohol to people under 21 years of age, and to pregnant women.”

Rany and other Health Ministry officials yesterday de-clined to provide a copy of the draft legislation.

In its current iteration, the draft includes 11 chapters and 39 articles, said Mom Kong, director of Cambodian Movement for Health.

I don't think this will make much difference to the people I know; none of them live in the 50 cent beer part of the market. But with just a bit of luck, it signifies a fleeing Western peasantry heading over the border to Vietnam where beer is still bargain basement prices (and where unqualified "English teachers" get paid more too).

I propose that we round up some lovely dusky maidens to cheerfully wave goodbye to the convoy of buses departing Phnom Penh the day that this comes into law.

I disagree, I think the first target will be the expensive hotels and restaurants, the last people the govt want to piss off are the electorate.

So expect luxury spirits and wines, along with imports to be hit hard.

That was my worry, I was thinking in terms of imported wines and spirits, goodbye to $13 a bottle Haut-Médoc :(

I can't be bothered putting too much effort into it, but there's a pun about "draft laws" here somewhere...

You mean the law against 50c draft beer ? :beer1:

And then there are all the laws that don't do what they are supposed to do...
The "honeymoon" will be over when laws already in place are are applied.
