The good old days

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

If self-employed you don't pay at the end of the year. You pay in advance.
i didnt, i got paid all my cash and the tax was up to me to sort out, never paid any tax in advance, never actually paid any tax whilst i was in Oz
same as in england, if your self employed and getting paid, you dont have to pay your tax until you get your tax return papers to fill in, if you pay in advance, you get a tax rebate, if you dont, you pay with your tax return
Then I guess things must have changed since I left.
maybe, the whole time ive been in work, if i do any cash in hand work, i need to "claim" it when i do my tax return in order to pay the tax i owe,
if i work solely "cash in hand" work, then i will have to claim it all when i do my tax return, then they will calculate how much i owe,
i dont have to gradually pay it in set amounts, some businesses will pay your tax for you, some dont,
thats the past 14 years anyway, not sure what it was like in OZ but it was the same set up when i was there in 2015
There used to be a thing called an SE60. If you worked for an agency, for example, you would pay 25% or something then get your tax back after you filed your returns. It was a great saving scheme, especially if you only worked up to the threshold.
They call it something else now i beleive?
that is true,
Some building sites work through a brick barron, which kind of work like an agency,
If i work on a building site the brick barron is the company that pays my wages and my tax, 20%,
and because i only work 4 months of the year i get it all that tax paid back in a tax rebate every April,
So I usually get a £2500 cash boost while im in Cambodia, as my accountant does my tax return for me,
No one ever claims their cash in hand work, lol i built a big extension last year all cash in hand, so my tax return wasnt as generous this year, but as you say its like a savings thing for me haha

You should be mining ETH...

It's so much because Chinese monopoly on the distribution infrastructure. And lame politicians that would rather kill off the middle class than force the companies that generate the power to play fair and get out of bed with each other.

Well this is what the Guardian says about the UK. I think it's gone global though.
From 1 July 2017

The mood of the country, we are told, is turning against years of government-imposed austerity. We are fed up with being squeezed by spending cuts; we are rebelling against 1% pay caps – and we are absolutely right to do so. But the real reason the average household feels so badly off is less to do with government cuts and more to do with profiteering by private companies

Research this week by Santander blows the whistle on the ever-growing portion of our monthly pay that goes on largely unavoidable household bills. It looked at bills for gas, electricity, water, TV, phone and so on – and found they have escalated in price far, far ahead of average wage rises. Since 2006, average pay packets in Britain have gone up by 19% in pounds and pence terms (in other words, not adjusting for inflation). Meanwhile, the average gas bill has gone up 73%, electricity 72%, and water 41%.

https://www.theguardian.com/money/blog/ ... -companies

In Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations he says that health and education should not be a psrt of the free market.
If he were alive in the era of home electricity, paying for water, and gas to the less well off, I'm convinced he would have included those as well.

1200 is a lot, I only pay 700. As far as I know electricity in Cambodia is pretty expensive compared to its neighbors, I'm surprised it's that expensive in Australia.

Not having a go at you Diggr, but how long has it been since you've been back mate? I went back in December for the first time in 5 years and was absolutely blown away by how expensive food has gotten. $28 a kg for T-bone steak in Coles and Woolies, that isn't a patch on the export quality I can get here for $19. B grade beef mince for $9.00, again 2 bucks more expensive then better quality here, Lamb shanks that restaurants sell here for around $10 are close to $15 in supermarkets. Limes - 3 for $2, Mangos - almost $2 each. Even a bloody Toblerone costs 4 bucks in Coles now.

Then we wont even start to talk about women.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.
