The Depressing Side Effects of the Expat Lifestyle
Meh, maybe she makes a few valid points here and there. Ok, at least food for thought.
1. Your loved ones will be devastated.
No matter how you try to sugarcoat it, moving abroad is essentially a selfish choice.
It’s great that you’re living your dream and are choosing the life (you think) you want, but really, you’re not making anyone happy but yourself.
If you’re blessed with amazing family and friends, they will do anything to hide their true feelings from you...

My loved ones will be devastated? They were happy to see me go....
I will feel guilty all the time? Can't say I have felt guilty in 50 years as an expat.
I'll feel really, really lonely? Let me discuss this with my girlfriend when she comes back from work in a few minutes.
I won't fit in anymore? I sure try to fit in anywhere that I live.
I'll lose dear friends? Never had any.

You reading some weird stuff there GM.
Poor girl. She sounds so young:
A bit naïve considering she been away 10 years.Mustn't generalise, but everyone knows that all expats are completely identical, and most of them resemble me, of course
At least she's got a sense of humour.

Which she replaces by you, you, you..."You will feel lonely, you will feel guilty, you will lose your all your friends " etc.I was so busy with me, me and me...,

LoL, I thought it was a funny read.
She is clearly not cut out for being an expat. Hell, I'm not sure she's cut out for life in any form. If you're lonely as an expat, you're doing it wrong.

Well, in all honesty moving all the time doesn't make for a lot of close friends; I do not expect huge crowds at my wake.
But that is OK, I chose, and like, my lifestyle....

Hehhehe... i'm not an expat, but those feeling happened to me when I was abroad. It was a nice place, but no family and friends with me. I don't mention people kissed in front of me.

I can't think of the name of the philosophical view she has. But its very pointed towards thinking of other before yourself. Calling it selfish. I don't know if her point to the article was seriously trying to give you a guilt trip or not.
But from my point of view, I don't have many friends and unfortunately my friends revolve around the here and now, not in the future. If I move on so do my friendships. Every project I fly to I become friends with those I work with but once I leave that's it. No more communication or very light. With family I have to agree a little bit but hell what parents, that actually care about their children, not want them to stay in the same town maybe even the same street as them until their dying days?
The only person I would call a best friend I haven't spoke to in 2+ years.

Love this;
I have very few best friends ( can count on one hand) and they are spread out around the world, some i chat with every few days, some once every 4-6 months.
But when we do its like we just spoke.
The original quote by the gen i disagree with.
I would be depressed as well, if that was how things were in my life

Thank god my family an friends are the complete opposite. If you’re blessed with amazing family and friends, they will do anything to hide their true feelings from you...
