The dangers of excessive alcohol and other friends

Post by EdinWigan »

Maybe out of respect to Peters friends and family but to allow a valuable discussion to continue.

Maybe just start your post of with which substance you are talking about, just to make it easier to follow. i.e.

ALCOHOL - Beer.

Only a small amount can trigger a Choking Gag Reflex and if the person is lying in the supine position, can result in death in 5 minutes ( with irreversible damage after just 3 minutes)

Lack of alcohol - beer/wines or spirits

Lack of any can trigger a boring life and if the person is an accountant, can result in more super-boredom (with reversible damage if he finds another career within a week)

Alcohol certainly could've killed the person in question if he wasn't a regular drinker and just went absolutely crazy with it. It would be tough with somebody like myself who has 3 or 4 almost every night. The liver is like any other organ - you've got to work it out.

I have seen this. Lack of alcohol can even turn you into an accountant.
This is why I take protective measures seriously - my old man was an accountant so I know what I'm talking about. :beer2:

A quick examination of the facts would lead you to conclude that to die from alcohol poisoning on beer - an average sized man would need to consume more than 20 beers in a single hour. This is possible but so incredibly unlikely that the conclusion does not make sense.

Beer + other drugs, on the other hand, can kill relatively easily. Meth, heroin, Valium, etc. take your pick. This is far more likely particularly in the context of Cambodia and Sihanoukville's party scenes.

Beer and some usually harmless prescription drugs can probably kill, too, or at least induce vomiting, and if you're too drunk to wake up...

Even a litre of salt water will make you puke most times

From the other thread we have Hotdigr's account "who happened to be an eyewitness to the whole thing and had talked to Peter Riley an hour before his untimely death":

Hotdigr wrote:
He was found in his bed lying on his back, with no pulse or respiration. When his mate " sat" him up, a large amount of vomit flew out of his throat.

An ambulance was called from C.T clinic and he was carried out of his room to the front of the guesthouse and put in the recovery position ( as per the photo) to wait for the ambulance.

When they came they pronounced him dead.

I saw and talked to him around 1 hr before this and he and his mate were EXTREMELY wasted. I am not 100% sure, but I don't think drugs were involved. His mate said that they had drunk around 40 beers in 12 hours. He quite obviously choked to death on his own vomit.

From the evidence I would concur with Hotdigr's assessment that the victim died of asphyxiation while intoxicated.

Alcohol doesn't kill people. People kill people.
