The Countries Polluting the Oceans the Most
This whole "ban the straws" political movement amuses me. Like the global warming debate, nothing will change until the usual culprits clean up their acts. So, until China stop being filthy buggers, the straws aren't going to matter much. The bigger question to me is what is it that the powers-that-be don't want us to notice, that they're handing down such utter rubbish as "hey, no more straws!"
The Countries Polluting The Oceans The Most
A team of researchers in the United States and Australia led by Jenna Jambeck, an environmental engineer at the University of Georgia, analyzed plastic waste levels in the world's oceans. They found that China and Indonesia are the top sources of plastic bottles, bags and other rubbish clogging up global sea lanes. Together, both nations account for more than a third of plastic detritus in global waters, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.
In 2010, 8.8 million metric tons of mismanaged plastic waste in the ocean was traced back to China while 3.2 million metric tons came from Indonesia. The United States is also guilty of polluting oceans with plastic, but at a much lower level than China. Annually, 0.3 million metric tons of waterborne plastic garbage comes from the United States.

I have such a hard time believing any table or anything people say about environmental issues because of how much junk science there is. Those at the top and those spreading this info are just as clueless as those at the bottom.
It's like the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch", a continent that is 2 times the size of Texas in the Pacific. It's such a joke, my family's in Texas and I know how big it is, and I've flown over the Pacific more than I have fingers and toes, and there is no such thing as this super sized garbage continent magically floating around.

Yep. I'm also amused by the banning of single-use plastic bags in Queensland last month. First thing we did was buy some plastic rubbish bags to replace the ones we were using after bringing home our groceries in them. Net result, same output of plastic waste - but now we buy the bags. A clear demonstration of how big business lobby governments and get what they want. Tell me again how this is helping... Now when you go to Coles or Woolworths, you have to bring your own plastic bags or buy them for 15c each! Not only do you have to do this, if you want to get through quickly, you need to scan, bag and pay all on your lonesome too, as the express-lanes are frequently not staffed, and multiple customers are waiting at the reduced number of manned checkouts available.StroppyChops wrote: ↑Mon Aug 06, 2018 10:17 am This whole "ban the straws" political movement amuses me. Just yesterday, I watched as a tourist tried to understand the no bag policy at Coles, refusing to purchase a plastic bag for 15c and walking out carrying his items. Welcome to Australia!
Won't be long and they'll find something else to hoodwink/brainwash the public here with.

Re: The Countries Polluting the Oceans the Most
yeah i watched some documentaries about it, the way its made out is like its some solid mass of plastic thats accumulated and floating about the ocean, its just water thats dirty with a lot of plastic in it, its of coarse very bad, but its not a giant continent of plastic, its just a large area of polluted waterbangkokhooker wrote: ↑Mon Aug 06, 2018 12:34 pmyeah all good and all but texas is 268k sq miles big and the pacific is 63 sq million miles big!GTC7 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 06, 2018 11:24 am It's like the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch", a continent that is 2 times the size of Texas in the Pacific. Re: The Countries Polluting the Oceans the Most
the no plastic bag policy has been in action in England for a good year or 2 now, it does work, its a step in the right direction, but we are not bad for plastic waste pollution, the huge amount of plastic waste pollution by other countries makes it an almost pointless ripple in a huge oceanJoker Poker wrote: ↑Mon Aug 06, 2018 11:30 amYep. cambodians only have themselves to blame.
they still just throw their rubbish on the floor, river,or sea.
there needs to be lots of education but its going to take at least 15/20 years for the next generation to make changes.its just not in their dna.throw it or burn it.
polystyrene is the evil of the world (being a plastic).
you can reduce the physical size of it by pouring petrol or other petro based fluid on.it reduces it to its basic compound, takes out the air.then let it dry and bin it.
i had 200 large size polystyrene food boxes and poured two litre of old petrol at it reduced it to a cup full of plastic which I binned.

Re: The Countries Polluting the Oceans the Most
I read an article in some magazine a few years back about garbage that was washing up on beaches around the world where there was analysis of the debris that could be identified of source of origin. It stated most was from China.
Water quenches the thirst, alcohol releases the truth.
