I am an expat in Thailand for past 13 years and I drive on Bangkok roads everyday I have to say like you I don't feel unsafe. Problem is with alcohol many drink and drive here in Thailand despite the tough law. Also agree with you feeling unsafe in crime and over here is ok and yes many European country in really unsafe, wife just got robbed in Vienna, yes Vienna, lost everything, passport, credit cards and money. Happened in January 17th in Vienna Station.

There are feelings and there are cold hard facts. That's why anecdotal evidence isn't accepted by anyone studying anything seriously. Sometimes we remain unaware of things going around us or even deceive ourselves.

Automobile fatalities per 100,000 according to WHO:

Thailand 36.2
Cambodia 17.4
Austria 5.4

Crimes like robberies are more rare and they get a lot of attention basically everywhere. They even shock people. Meanwhile, auto accidents become a fact of life like cancer and don't get as much attention. The fact remains you're much more statistically likely to die on the road in Thailand than you would be in any other country in the world except Libya.

That is remarkeble! Thailand more than twice as dangerous than Cambodia

? But it confirms my opinion. trafic in PP is bad, but in the rest of the country not dangerous apart from the putholes and dust.

Those numbers were not mentioned/considdered in the post: Cambodia or Thailand? I prefered Cambodia, although I like Thailand really a lot, maybe even more as tourist destination. But all together I prefer Cambodia to live and than travel to Thailand for vacation!

Nor will injuries that are self-inflicted, as in the case of diving into water off a cliff or jumping from a balcony. But that should just be common sense really.

I first became aware of the dangers of Thailand while working as a travel writer in the Philippines. To counter the dangerous reputation that the Philippines holds, I checked the figures for foreigners murdered there and in Thailand and Cambodia in 2001. Results were Cambodia 1, Philippines 71, Thailand 247. Almost all victims were expats, not tourists. More than half the Thai murders were in Pattaya and Angeles City accounted for 1/3 of the murders there. The numbers weren't adjusted to account for expat or tourist numbers, but I think a clear inference can be drawn.

i feel as safe her as anywhere and have been here a bit longer than 13 years. Have had 1 car accident,1 motorbike accident
Have had run ins with the local Mafia, (but was running a late night disco an they were trying to muscle in) and my house was robbed 2x ( both in Patong ages ago) and gotten into arguments with Thai's

as to driving
If you understand how thai's drive there is no problem, ( have done over 400,000 kms in this country)
The thing is you MUST, when driving, be always looking around you an use ur mirrors, drive defensively an offensively at all times.
Never assume cause the car or bike in front with his right turn signal on, his turning right.

IF u try and behave as u do back home or get shit faced drunk, yea, bad things can happen
If u drive a motorcycle drunk an have never driven one before, chances are good you will have an accident.
If u bad mouth a group of thai's or insult the king....yep, ur going to be attacked
If u take a ladyboy home and refuse to pay her ( him) cause u "thought" she/he was a girl, yep shit happens

Dangerous.... try parts of La, london, New York, El Salvador etc etc.

yeah i feel safer in Asia than i do in the UK
