BEERS (a digression)

It would be amusing (and not expensive or difficult to arrange) to have a social meet-up with perhaps a dozen
beer aficionados engaging in a blind tasting and evaluation of Leo, Zorok and maybe ten or twelve other canned
and bottled beers available in Cambodia.

There would probably be some surprises, just as there are in similar blind evaluations of wine - with Chilean,
Romanian, Bulgarian and Moroccan wines coming out surprisingly well.

Just a thought for sometime in the future.

I have done this, on a smaller scale, a few times and most people get it wrong. A lot of it is visual, i.e. we see the can and it influences our taste buds.

Apparently Pepsi always comes in ahead of Coke in blind tastings......

Zorok used to be everywhere, but disappeared a few years ago in Phnom Penh, and a bit after that from Kampot as well. Rumour I heard was that no duty was ever paid on them and they were intentionally flooding the market will low prices or something. Similarly to Klang and most other local beers, it tasted fine if chilled to near freezing temperatures.

And regarding the blind tasting: I've said it countless times, willing to bet 90% of expats who say X is say much better than Y wouldn't be able to tell the various lagers apart in such a test. Playboy can brag all he wants, he'd get some wrong for sure.

i remember when i was down the 4000 islands in Laos, and some girl came up to me in a bar (4000 island bar) and asked if i wanted to do the Coke/Fanta challenge...

i agreed and thought ones Coke, the others Orangeade, simple...

wrong... very wrong...

i know they are both owned by Coca~Cola but still...
they tasted identical

deffo agree what you see effects what you taste, works the same with foods as well, even trained chefs can struggle to identify food when blindfolded

As part of my hotel school examination, we had to taste our way through a 100+ items. The only item I blew was beer!!!!! Sure, it was warm, Swiss beer out of a metal cup, but still........
