Teaching jobs

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Is there a time of the year when it's not so easy to find an English teaching job? How long is the school year

Don't get offended by my question because I am genuinely curious. What is the continued attraction to teaching English in Phnom Penh? The place is getting more and more expensive while wages are still crap, the market for job searchers is getting more competitive, and it is becoming less of an adventure to live here. Why not go make 30 an hour in Vietnam, Myanmar, or the Middle East? Cambodia is still a great place to live for some, but why would TEFLers still want to work in the kingdom?

Aint it funny how we complain about crap wages here in the KOW, but meanwhile many Cambodians still get paid $100 pm or less for working 9 hours a day 6 days a week, cleaning rooms and restaurants,,,,, a lot less than clothing factory workers. No wonder there are a endless supply of workers wanting to work in Thailand, Malaysia etc.

My guess is ,if we want higher salaries we should do like Cambodian workers do, give up the easy lifestyle in Cambodia and work in another country.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.

In general, only idiots or retirees work in schools Cambodia. The Khmer push the rest out. The schools also seem to get a real power rush by keeping a barang-on-a-leash if they find one down on his luck by not supplying them with enough hours to escape.

But yeah mostly the smart ones leave pretty quick . :P :stir:

I'm guessing it's much, much more difficult to get legitimate work visas/permits in the neighboring countries than it was just a few years ago. Those countries have also been cracking down on the easy tourist visa renewels which allowed many teachers to stay long-term in-country and work illegally in the past. Cambodia hasn't enforced all those strict visa controls just yet...although they are making strides towards stricter work visa oversight and it's only a matter of time before the gig is up for those teachers with questionable credentials and habits.

Yep, the whole school system will be shut down and rebuilt from scratch I'm sure. The bad teachers show up the good school managers .lol

They may both use prostitutes, but not all bad teachers are thieves.

my khmer friend opened a bar recently and i offered to help work behind the bar as she was after a barman, worked my first day on tuesday, wasnt doing it for the money as i can earn more in 3 hours in england than the wages they were offering per month ($200) it was the 7-8hour days with only 2 days off a month that made me withdraw my offer lol fuck that
