What ? to the westerners that only have 2 fists? Instead of the Khmers that have 8-12 depending on how many of their mates are in the province at the time.bolueeleh wrote:jamie, u shld teach boxing

I can just see that now. Thousands of military and police giving up their weapons and asking Jamie to teach them boxing instead.bolueeleh wrote:jamie, u shld teach boxing
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Some of us enjoy pain and illegal treatment for crappy wages.KPTIC wrote:Don't get offended by my question because I am genuinely curious. What is the continued attraction to teaching English in Phnom Penh? The place is getting more and more expensive while wages are still crap, the market for job searchers is getting more competitive, and it is becoming less of an adventure to live here. Why not go make 30 an hour in Vietnam, Myanmar, or the Middle East? Cambodia is still a great place to live for some, but why would TEFLers still want to work in the kingdom?
Seriously, some of us are stuck here, in my case age and my family. It could be worse, I could be stuck at home.

Aint it funny how we complain about crap wages here in the KOW, but meanwhile many Cambodians still get paid $100 pm or less for working 9 hours a day 6 days a week, cleaning rooms and restaurants,,,,, a lot less than clothing factory workers. No wonder there are a endless supply of workers wanting to work in Thailand, Malaysia etc.
My guess is ,if we want higher salaries we should do like Cambodian workers do, give up the easy lifestyle in Cambodia and work in another country.

Surprisingly enough, soldiers are often trained in self defense. A well-known Irishman who lived here for years had a gig training RCAF troops in some Chinese martial art.Duncan wrote:I can just see that now. As for the OP, I really can't see why anyone would want to come and teach English here nowadays. It was viable 10-20 years ago, but salaries have remained static and there is an over-abundance of TEFL teachers. I used to do it but don't ever want to again.

voluntourism with barang victim as donor
i know well qualified people who could teach as true professionals in their home countries as toefl prep for university foreign students on
here, they are paid 1200/month.
it is a grubby backpacker gig, and you cannot live very well on the paltry remuneration, so why try it?

Re: Teaching jobs
ive considered it many times, and have a long list of people that want me to teach them (barrang+khmer), and ive given out a fair few free 1 on 1 lessons, but without having my own gym and quality facilities i cant justify charging people for it, im not like no jokebolueeleh wrote:jamie, u shld teach boxing

I get why some of the long timers are still here. You used to be able to live like a king on $1200 a month from TEFL, and the kingdom really does grow on you. I'm wondering why new TEFLers are still showing up in droves given that the situation here has changed.vladimir wrote:Some of us enjoy pain and illegal treatment for crappy wages.KPTIC wrote:Don't get offended by my question because I am genuinely curious.
