teachers getting reduced salary because of coronavirus?

Post by wolfcreek »

Are any of the private schools reducing their teacher's salaries now (because of declining enrollment)? I heard some schools are cutting salaries by 50% now, but still requiring employees to work 8 hours per day...

Well Lots of schools have reduced salaries to $0 since no one is working there at the moment...
But the schools who still have Khmer staff are likely running at reduced wages, I think. I don't blame them. They simply can't afford it. They have no income coming in. How would they continue paying people the same wage? If they're having them working at all, it's out of the goodness of the higher ups. There's not really much work to be done. Some schools are still having a few expat teachers working, trying to do online classes. I've heard it's not turning out all that productively, but I'm not surprised. The teachers, through no fault of their own, aren't trained in online learning, and likely aren't using the same systems and materials that online learning platforms have. Everyone's just trying to keep something going.
Do you think the parents of baby boomers whined so much when the boomers started changing society? And yet the whiney ones like to call young people "snowflakes." Hmm...

Most parents pay the school fees quarterly. They had to pay the next term on or before April 1st, but I'm sure nobody came and coughed up this semester. So all the money they have now is the profit they made in Q1 and Q2 of this school year, and money from s@ckers like me who paid for the whole year in advance. Guess they are short on cash, or running short on cash soon.

Financial ruin for private schools?

If current COVID-19 restrictions continue, the approximately 300 private schools, educational and training institutions in Cambodia will have three to four months before they will be bankrupt, claims Mengly Quach, CEO of Mengly J Quach Education.

Speaking to Khmer Times, he said that since the pandemic began, schools have not had enough tuition fees to cover paying wages, rents, utilities and interest on loans and will have to suspend their operations in the near future.

“Rental fees are our biggest issue and while we acknowledge there has been some support from the government and financial institutions, this simply won’t be enough. As an educational institution, our funding requires more than just solely the tuition fee; we also rely on the school bus, food,

uniforms, books and other administration fees to support the business model. Now there are no students, all this income has been lost,” Mengly said. “While the school is not about 100 percent profit, we do have to make an income to ensure all our overheads are covered,” he said.

“For my education institution, Mengly J Quach Education, we have approximately 6,000 students and 700 teachers who need their monthly salary.

“I hope that this COVID-19 pandemic will end by May, however, if it doesn’t, we will face bankruptcy as my costings for both staff wages and loan interest is nearly $1.2 million per month,” he added.

I can tell you I'm currently teaching 178 kids a week. Before covid19, I taught 105. Our school's campuses have all the classroom aircons off, the lights are off, reduced staff (they don't pay them) such as extra security, extra cleaners, librarians, and other unnecessary employees. The English teachers at my campus are also teaching close to 200 kids each of which is almost DOUBLE the students. I would love to see their accounting books to truly see if they are running in red or black just off of that.
I don't see how my school can be losing money. but sure, they cut our salaries by 50% too.

He is obviously doing online teaching.
In response to raven, the school is not necesarily making money, most schools provide the service hoping to keep parents happy so they keep on paying.
The problem is a lot aint paying, and those that do may not be happy at paying the full amount for online teaching.

yes sir- most private schools are teaching online currently.

My school wouldn't let the students enroll without tuition being covered. In all fairness, I have not looked at the price and it could be at a reduced rate.

Just curious, where do you live, and do they still have full staff on? Most of the schools here in Siem Reap seem to be either closed, or have reduced staff. Several teachers I know are out of work. One friend is working, but she's the only one working for her grade. Basically they cut all teachers except for one per grade(so about 1 in 4 teachers is working). That teacher prepares an online lesson for the entire grade twice per week. She went from making $700/month to $200/month, is doing just as much work, and is also now preparing lessons for way more students. The rest of the teachers are just out of jobs. That's the basic situation in Siem Reap as far as I know it, but I certainly don't know the specifics of every school here. It seems that most aren't working, some are working at greatly reduced wages.

Many more Khmer staff are still working, but at reduced wages.

I think the situation you described above is the same as is happening here in PP. schools are keeping a skeleton staff on to cover the online stuff and everyone else has been laid off. I would also estimate that the figure of 1 in 4 Teachers being laid off at your friends school is the same here.
But the question remains, what are the laid off teachers doing? How are they coping? (Rent still needs paying etc) And what will happen when the school closures are rolled back and everyone goes back to work.
